As a matter of human courtesy and good will and for the sake of an essential level of trust and cooperation, in public office, you have to respect the people on your side. That does not require one to be blind to their failings or even to like them as individuals. And only fools try to slake their appetite for spite by consuming their futures and the best hopes for their larger cause.
