Being a surgeon, obtaining most any available substance should be fairly easy. Even more so when one is retired, with no position to lose or medical board to please. This is mostly unrelated, but I recall the strange smile that abortionist Dr. Gosnell had pasted on his face throughout his trial. No one could explain his cozy, self satisfied, very placid expression. Almost a Mona Lisa Smile. Some speculated that Gosnell was blitzed out on something to help him get through the trial, a trial he knew would bring the ending of his professional career.
