However, I'll throw in a recommendation for the AdBlock extension. It's available on both Chrome and Firefox. You won't see ads from the aggregators at all -- malicious, benign, or just annoying. Which specific Ad blocker extension are you referring to? There's something on the order of 300+ available for Firefox that have similar names.
I have Adblock Plus installed and still had an issue accessing FR with it.
I also use Ghostery in both Chrome and Firefox which may have also blocked access. Not 100% sure.

Which specific Ad blocker extension are you referring to? Like you, I use AdBlock (and Ghostery, too).
I'm not claiming it would have helped you with access to FreeRepublic today. It's simply a way to protect you from malware distributed via advertising aggregators, as well as from other annoying ads.
I didn't see a problem at all, today. And I have the option to "block reported attack sites" turned on.

I had the same problem in spite of Adblock and Adblock plus until about 30 minutes ago.

I use Adblock Edge with Pale Moon browser and get no warnings neither in freerepublic nor aim.org
