"I don't understand why anyone needs to own military-style assault weapons, and I think they should be more difficult, if not nearly impossible, to obtain."Second amendment aside, I don't understand why anyone would want to ban military-style assault weapons, since they are almost never used in crimes.
(Or, actually I do understand -- liberal politicians must have recurrent nightmares that include scenes from the Storming of the Bastille.)

"Second amendment aside, I don't understand why anyone would want to ban military-style assault weapons, since they are almost never used in crimes." Good point..
This is a typical FBI chart showing the types of guns used.
As you point out, assault weapons are almost non-existent.
Gun control freaks, if honest, would be going after handguns. But then, that would require honesty. Something that leftists liberal progressives seem to be short on.

We here in the U.S. have been surprisingly lenient in our treatment of counter-Revolutionaries.
