Donald Trump to rivals: Give up your super PACs
businessinsider.com ^ | Colin Campbell

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump released a statement on Friday calling on every presidential candidate to drop their so-called super PACs.

"I have disavowed all Super PAC's, requested the return of all donations made to said PAC's, and I am calling on all Presidential candidates to do the same," Trump said.

Super PACs, which can raise and spend unlimited funds, are required to be independent of the campaigns they support, though some candidates blur the lines more than others.

Trump's statement came one day after Politico reported that the main super PAC backing his campaign, Make America Great Again PAC, was closing shop.

The PAC said it decided to shutter because Trump indicated that he didn't want a super PAC, but the decision followed increasing media scrutiny on the connections between Trump's campaign and the supposedly independent operation.

Trump doesn't have a super PAC.

I respect and read your comments.

Don't destroy your reputation by lying.

I told you three times, it's in line 4. What part of that is so difficult for you?

It's Make America Great Again PAC.

It was started in July.

Trump associations with said PAC were reported several days ago.

Trump tells PAC to stop, after Trump associations were reported.

You want to talk embarrassment, you "devout Christian", you?

You're so scary, LOL!

To: CatherineofAragon

Cat, why don't you and I stay away from each. I am a devout Christian, but you are tempting me to step away from my promise to behave.

I am an effing killer...please don't f@ck with me.

Political PACs are run by well connected insiders, corporations and influence peddlers who are shakedown artists for special interest groups. This is certainly no secret. Are you not aware of this?

I said nothing about who runs PACS.

Of course special interests associate with PACS.

We already limit political speech. You would limit it further?

Donald Trump is a hypocrite for coordinating his own PAC

**************

Apparently there were more than one.

From the article:

Trump’s Friday statement said that he sent notices on Wednesday disavowing the
nine super PACs supporting his White House bid.

There's your integrity again (or lack thereof). You just don't have it do you.

Ugly little girl. Evil little girl.

Hell is waiting for you, little girl.

You're gonna love it.

You will feel right at home.

Appears to me that Trump has no expectation whatsoever that his opponents will agree.
He is doing it to bring public attention on the PACs.
To show the nature of the beast and its influence.
To raise questions.

You don’t like being reminded of your hypocrisy, do you, LOL?
I don’t blame you.

That “tough” (as a kitten) talk must have tarnished your halo.

I am not the one you should fear.

I am a nobody.

But you will face Someone who demands your honesty...your repentance.

But keep on picking on those at FR who are trying to tell the truth.

Cheese...I hate it that you might suffer.

But when I try to help you...you slap me.

You believe your Democrat reality show star is telling you the truth.

I’ll stick with the conservative, Ted Cruz, who has more than talk to back up his claims.

Honey, rest assured I don’t fear you. You’re probably some fat old bald guy who couldn’t make good on “tough” talk, even to a woman.

If the oligarchs are buying the little guy, what difference does it really make? It would be better for the guy with the dough to represent himself rather than pick a little guy to sell bullshat to the people.

Candidate Trump has direct association with a political Super PAC?

Can you list what these specific associations are and how they’re directly related to candidate Trump?

Thanks!

Why? So only billionaires can run?
Campaign Finance “Reform” initially outlawed unlimited spending by a person on his own campaign. SCOTUS rightly said that was an abridgment of freedom of speech. Only thing wrong with the ruling is that it upheld limits on contributions by unrelated individuals.

Why do I reject that? Because, freedom of the press. The problem is that CFR can’t touch The New York Times Corporation, nor would we want it to. But, freedom of the press is not freedom of The New York Times alone (much as they might wish it so). So, McCain-Feingold contains a list of “presses” which have freedom. What’s wrong with that? First and foremost, it ground-rules out freedom of your press, or mine. It puts the government in the business, essentially, of licensing presses.

Another ghastly effect of McCain-Feingold is that its list of presses inevitably reads essentially like the membership of the Associated Press. And the AP is inherently a meeting of people of the trade of journalism which decides what is and is not news:

People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary. - Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations (1776)
So CFR is about maximizing the clout of “The MSM.” Like the exception for spending your own money on your own campaign, SuperPACs are a leak around the plug of CFR. The irony is that by the very act of disbanding, the Make America Great Again PAC confesses that it is obeying Trump and therefore is not truly independent of him.

Trump’s antic (and it is an antic) is a well-deserved digitus impudicus to the fatuous logic of Campaign Finance Reform censorship. It is actually bullying behavior exploiting his personal wealth advantage. No other candidate can accept his challenge, least of all JEB (who has very little hard money because he is a big-donor guy, almost exclusively).

The fallacy of CFR is that nobody’s money - not that of The New York Times, and not that of Donald Trump, and not yours or mine is inherently “dirty” or inherently “clean.” Under the First Amendment it is all just money, clean unless its owner is proven guilty. Not self-interested, but legally held guilty of a crime.

And another irony is “earned media.” Life isn’t fair, and Trump seems to command the attention of “the media” in spite of themselves.

Well, for practical reasons, one might prefer someone who takes money from multiple oligarchs to an oligarch himself.

Here’s why: the fellow who takes money from oligarchs (and from many people who aren’t oligarchs) is answerable to a plethora of people.

The oligarch answers only to himself.

Which is fine if you’re in agreement with the oligarch. But should he change his mind, or turn out to be a liar, you will have less influence on him than the fellow who needs the money.

I rather like PACs. I’m not a billionaire. My donations, by themselves, mean nothing. But combined with large numbers of people, we can have an effect.

I pretty much agree with you. I don’t believe in restrictions of campaign contributions.

that’s true, but he did call for the practical end of them......which of course would leave the media, the unions, the Soros’ of the world to dominate politics.

Yeah, that’ll be great for all us conservatives....

Btw, it's my position these political super PAC's are run by big dollar political influence peddlers, lobbyist and well connected DC insiders with big league special interests.

All the professional career politicians have them. And I fully understand they're supposed to be independent from the candidates. But we all know that's bull sh*t right? Right?

Btw was it independent small time ol' Ma and Pa from Hogjaw Kansas who agreed to have Cruz's political super PAC funnel $500,000 to Fiorina's political super PAC?
