Under orders to slash their water use in the fourth year of a statewide drought, Los Angeles residents and businesses have largely risen to the challenge.
But this week, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said that because its customers have done such a good job saving, the agency is short on revenue.
To help fill in the gap, the Board of Water and Power Commissioners approved a pass-through charge that will require an average customer to pay about $1.80 more a month, beginning in 2016.
The 18 billion gallons of unsold water left the utility about $57 million in the hole. Officials say they need that money about $380 million in total to cover fixed costs such as pipe repairs, aqueduct maintenance and continued operation of water-treatment facilities. A city ordinance allows the utility to recover those costs from customers using a so-called water revenue adjustment factor.

RELAX. I quite sure once the drought is over the rates will be lowered.
There is a desalinization plant coming in San Clemente.
Yes indeed. One. Will deliver in a year about 1/80th of the water they say the state needs to refill the reservoirs to “normal levels”. (my math may be a bit off on that :-))
I love it...I understand the concept of water useage during a drought, but under normal circumstances, you couldn’t waste water if you tried.....they pump it out of the river, clean it, send it to you, you wash dishes, brush your teeth, flush the toilet, it runs back through the sewage system, is filtered, purified, and poured back into the river....same water.
Liberals always find dxcuses to raise service rates.
Cut back on use, govt says we have a shortfall, we must raise taxes/rates.
Use too much, ned to raise taxes/rates to conserve and increase capacity, etc, etc.
Use the same, we must raise rates for fixing infrastructure, and for projected shortfalls or inreased usage, etc, etc.
No matter what hapens they hsve myriads of excuses for raising rates and taxes.
You cant expect govt to get by on less....
