“Sensible gun legislation” ought to include a formal course at high school level, of the care, use, feeding and grooming of personal firearms, and other self-defense strategies. Just as there is driver training in high schools, weapons training should be a requirement for further maturation of the young.

Such a course would emphasize the nature and purpose of the Second Amendment, even over the objections of those parents who are hysterically and morbidly in fear of the possession of means of self-defense. One of the requirements for the purchase of a weapon should be successful completion of just such a comprehensive course, and the issuance of a carry permit, either open or concealed.

I thought it was twenty thousand. And yes, exactly one of them is sensible. The rest are all arrant nonsense, and unconstitutional.

Here, in one compound sentence, is the only legitimate "gun law" on the US national government's books:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
