>> Maybe someone can enlighten how Dr. Carson was wrong
It appears to feed the meme that Jews didn’t do enough to defend themselves, and thus are partly to blame for their own demise. The meme is offensive.
On another matter, shtetl Jews had no guns so this confiscation discussion is irrelevant. What was confiscated were their boots and warm clothing, their table linens and candlesticks, and any material wealth they possessed. Their labor was stolen in slave labor camps. And then they were exterminated.
Statistically, Holocaust survivors and their families tend to be more conservative than long-time American Jews.
Whether one wishes to blame folks for the harm that befell them or not, it is a truism to say that it is more difficult to harm people if they are armed than not. Not impossilble, but more difficult.
One of the things that contributed to the Holocaust was the belief by the Jews who had integrated themselves into Jewish society, been accepted (for the most part) into that society, and even joined the Kaiser’s army, and served & fought honorably during WW I, they could not believe that their country could possibly turn on them.
Germany was the birthplace of Reform Judaism, and many German Jews saw themselves as Germans first, who just happened to be Jewish. They couldn’t believe how their neighbors turned on them.
But Europe has a very long history of anti-semitism, and goes very deep.
