The United States has pulled the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier that has been central in the fight against the Islamic State, from the Persian Gulf, military officials said Thursday.
NBC News reported that the U.S. Navy now, for the first time since 2007, has no aircraft carrier in the sea. The aircraft carrier was taken out late Thursday so that it can undergo maintenance, but its temporary removal is also part of budget cuts.
The nuclear-powered USS Theodore Roosevelt, which houses approximately 5,000 troops and 65 combat planes, has played a large role in the Obama administration bomb campaign against Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIL or ISIS) since its conception in 2014.
Military officials previously warned of the aircraft carriers removal and its negative impact on U.S. capabilities in the region.
Without that carrier, there will be a detriment to our capability there, Adm. John Richardson, currently the chief of Naval Operations, told the Senate Armed Services Committee in July. While the USS Harry S. Truman will likely replace the carrier, it could be up to two months before that happens.
The removal comes just as the Obama administration on Friday ended its $500 million Pentagon program to train and arm Syrian rebels fighting IS in an acknowledgement of its failure.
At the same time, Russia has been boosting its military activity in the region over the last few weeks, sending military equipment and troops to Syria and starting to launch airstrikes in the country. Russia is also launching cruise missiles from ships in the Caspian Sea at targets in Syria and allegedly putting volunteer forces on the ground in the country.

He already had that moment, when bowing deep to the Saud.

China's only aircraft carrier isn't even fully operational at this point. They have made a lot of progress, but they aren't going to be sending it to Syria any time soon.
One thing for sure, an enemy only respects strength. And if you give them a mile they will take two. Once this joker is out of office it will take a long time to regain our place as the worlds most feared military.
This CGN is being pulled for political, not logistical reasons.
The Midway was the launch platform for the failed rescue attempt.
This must be that greater flexibility that 0 told Putin about for his second term.
Surely you realize it's absurd to suggest Russia will put 150,000 troops in Syria...and that the Chinese will put 8,000...right?
I know there have been false reports posted on this forum suggesting that.
But nothing from anyone that could be considered reputable.
China will not deploy ANY combat troops to Syria and Russia would have a hard time supporting 40,000.
And if you think Russia will attack a country with 200+ deliverable nukes, you're crazy.
It's still showing red lead. It'll be a long while.
right? they might as well admit it. It’s gotta be good for a bump in the polls from the naval transexual demo.
China has significant oilfields there. They abandoned them when fighting broke out. There are also Eighurs fighting there who will return to china and spread discontent if not killed first. Plus they have new troops, aircraft & an aircraft carrier that need real wartime experience. It is a conflict with little downside for them. No enemy aircraft, no enemy intel or large armor forces. No real threats to their only working carrier. A darn fine training opportunity.
You may not think they will go, but I say there is a good chance of it.
Syria will be part of Russia before we can get another carrier over there.
Looks like halfway through a west pac. New HP in Japan. Appears Truman’s deployed too.
Seriously, America won’t survive in a war against Andorra let alone Russia & China if 0bama was CIC.
There’s also a good chance that the military wouldn’t take his orders in a hot war.
Better yet, bring the ship home and put the POS in the brig.
More of an enemy islamist than Carter.
I believe we know what one of Obama’s secret side deals was with the Iranians.
I think Obama agreed to remove that carrier to appease the Iranian regime.
Why else would he work so hard for non-disclosure?
As for their only carrier, there's no way they would send it 6,000 miles to see if they can actually launch and land aircraft.
They would not be able to bear the embarrassment of towing it home.
Plus, the know that if Obama loses his mind and goes all butch on them, if the order went out for whatever reason, they could not protect that carrier or it's feeble escorts.
Many Americans take the US Navy for granted in that they don't appreciate their capabilities. Right now Russia has 40 or 50 aircraft on an airfield in Syria, static target.
The US Navy can put 75 aircraft anywhere, per carrier. Plus, these new Burke Class, 9-10kt "Destroyers are amazing.
120+ Vertical Launch Tubes that each carry 1-4 missiles of several varieties. And the best Radar/Fire Control/Targeting system ever devised.
When they travel they establish a 300 miles envelope around them, to include "up".
Here is an article from the San Diego Union Tribune.

The Ronald Reagan CVN 76 travels from San Diego to Japan. The George Washington CVN 73 travels from Japan to San Diego, then to Virginia. The Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71 leaves the Persian Gulf and travels to San Diego.
It was planned that no U.S. aircraft carrier will be on duty in the Persian Gulf for up to two months this fall.
The carrier Harry S Truman will be in the Persian Gulf in approximately two months.
The other carriers are in maintenance due to overuse back when we had 2 carriers in the Gulf for a long time. Plus the Ford was supposed to be in workups by now. Really bad timing to leave the Gulf uncovered.
