I used to live in Oregon. Most of the state is rural and sparsely populated compared to the Willamette Valley (Eugene) and the metropolitan area of Portland. Most of the state is conservative and red but the population numbers are in densely populated Portland and the northern Willamette Valley, which are blue.
The same is true in many states where the democRATS control the big cities and outnumber the Republicans in the rural areas.
