Caught between conflicting moral arguments, Gov. Jerry Brown, a former Jesuit seminary student, on Monday signed a measure allowing physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients who want to hasten their deaths.
Approving the bill, whose opponents included the Catholic Church, appeared to be a gut-wrenching decision for the 77-year-old governor, who as a young man studied to enter the priesthood.
In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death, Brown added. I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldnt deny that right to others."

Poor Old Moonbeam ... is caught between a lot of conflicting moral arguments ... like killing old people ... murdering unborn babies ... marrying homosexuals ... enforcing laws that he has solemnly sworn to uphold but doesn't like such as deporting illegals ... and that is why his guts wrench a lot!
Can I choose whom I want to assist?????
I have COPD and/or emphasema or whatever fancy name that want to call it
It's my fault, yes, I did it, yada yada yada
I have, at THIS time ... a hint of what it's like to suffocate to death
I'm conflicted
And I never was before now
Just an honest anecdotal statement of fact
Brown needs to be the first patient to use this service.
Moonbeam is a joke, but this is a good law. My death belongs to me and my walk with God. My death does not belong to the church, the state, the courts or FReepers.
I claim the right to die on my terms.
Can someone bent on suicide have at least the decency to do it without dragooning society into agreement with the act, please.
Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown, Catholic in name only.
Isn’t he under interdiction or something? Shouldn’t he be?
Doesn’t he know he could burn in Hell for this?
Or at the very least, spend a couple of millennia in purgatory.
Including dragooning society into agreement?
It isn’t that hard of an act to perform, physically.
I’m sorry but the Democrats are spouting astronimical stats on suicide by gun but yet they’re going to allow someone to get help being killed. SMH
All I want to know is how much money is in it?
Good. Maybe we can get all the left wing liberals in California to kill themselves. Promise them some money and a free Obama phone to do it.
And I was so absolutely sure my letter to the governor was going to convince him to veto this bill.
Absolutely no chance this will be abused or misused, a very slippery slope.
Brown never made, or was swayed by a moral argument in his life. What would a democrat do? is his only mantra.
Will the physician’s cocktail stand up to liberal scrutiny for use on death row? Will Moonbeam test it out for us and see if the prescribed drugs work? With his history and probable tolerance it would be a physician’s challenge. The hard part with most Californians will be determining the definition of brain death.
First, would the yet to be identified prescribed drugs meet the requirements for a lethal execution?
Second, who is going to test the drugs?
Third, are they better/quicker than suffocation?
Fourth, is this really going out on your own terms?
and
Finally, who pays if this gets botched and is there someone who will finish you off if you fail?
There’s a little anecdote to chew on.
"Gut-wrenching" says the Los Angeles Times.
People who want to die in other states will sue their state for having a ban on assisted-suicides, and then federal judges are going to strike down those bans, then SCOTUS will legalize it throughout the country.
At that moment I knew she was a lost cause.
Ive read nitrogen is the way to go.
