I don't see anything in the article indicating that they are currently nationals of China. If you see the second link I provided, many left China by emigrating in recent years. China apparently did not stop them from leaving, even the entire families. The article just says Chinese Uyghurs, which could just mean that they are from China, and they identify themselves as Chinese Uyghurs. The adjective âChineseâ does not necessarily mean that they are currently of Chinese nationality. There are some recent exiles from China in Turkey. They are escaping from Chinese authorities. The recent bombing of Erwan Shrine in Thailand is said to be the work of Chinese Uyghurs who were angry at the Thai authorities for deporting Uyghurs back to China, who escaped China to Thailand and sought by Chinese authorities.

I don't see anything in the article indicating that they are currently nationals of China. I said only that the article implied that they were not merely ethnic Chinese, but actual (former) residents and/or nationals of China.
I mean, wouldn't you assume that American citizens were meant in a press release referring to "American Jews?" Wouldn't you assume that Scotsmen were meant in an article referring to "Episcopalian Scotsmen?"
Obviously, they get a lot more clicks (or sell more newspapers, or something) if they make it sound like Chinamen fresh off the boat are "invading" Syria.
