If she has to hide behind the lawyer, this is a way to prepare her supporters for that. Of course, we know she already has an excellent criminal defense lawyer on the case, but so far he has been in the background, and not front and center.

He is referring to a federal law which states that defined mishandling of classified information disqualifies the perpetrator, presumably upon conviction of course, from holding public office.
The law is on the books.

I think Trump will pardon Hillary if convicted. I don’t think you can pardon someone preemptively. This will make him popular and hated by her supporters. They couldn’t let the smartest woman in the world go to prison and if timed right could grantee winning re-election. Unlike when Ford pardoned Nixon it would not cost him reelection. And twenty or more years from now it be seen as a wise decision for the same reasons that Ford’s pardon of Nixon.
