That might be symbolism over reality.
We live in the reality of instant communications, Internet etc. If that’s the Sheriff’s motive for not saying the name of the shooter suspect, it’s simply not realist and basically a meaningless gesture.
....And in truth you are correct. The name will come out one way or another.
