I think he respects Cruz, and see’s him as the perfect foil to what is wrong about Washington today. Also during the debates he seems to really listen to what Ted has to say.
That is a shame, but the problem is that Cruz decided too soon for a Presidential run. He's a very junior Senator with just a couple of years of legislative experience under his belt and low name recognition outside of movement conservatism.
Now, you may say that Obama was an even more junior Senator with far less experience, and you would be right. The difference is that the DNC decided to make Obama a star back in their 2004 National Convention and were shilling for him from then on. The RNC has no similar love for Cruz, so it's (unfortunately) up to him to build up his own reputation and name recognition.
