Russia in Syria: Air strikes on Homs are 'holy war against terrorism' says Russian Orthodox Church

The Russian Orthodox Church has backed the country's parliamentary decision to give President Vladimir Putin permission to use military force in Syria, saying the fight against terrorism is a "holy war".

The head of Synodal department for church and society, Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, told journalists on 30 September that the decision from the upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, to authorise air strikes in Syria was "consistent with international law, the mentality of our people and the role that our country has always played in the Middle East", according to Interfax news agency.

He added that Russia cannot be indifferent while Christians and other minority groups are being destroyed in the region. The interreligious council of Russia released a statement in support of military operations against terrorism in the Middle East. "The fight against terrorism is a holy struggle and today our country is perhaps the most active force in the world to combat terrorism," the priest said.

The Russian air strikes were in Talbiseh (Talbisa), Homs, far from ISIS forces. The Russians are bombing the Free Syrian Army.

Map of the Situation (including which areas are controlled by which factions)

The obvious reason is that the Russians hope to destroy moderate factions that want a secular government, leaving only radical Islamist factions like ISIS as an excuse to build up the Assad/Iranian side.

It appears that Putin's hope is to stabilize the situation and put it under the control of Iran and Russia before making pacts with other nations to move further south. It appears to be another Russian proxy campaign to take the Mediterranean (to control energy resources, ports, military routes and more) and to take Israel for the Mother Church of Russia (Eastern Orthodox) and similar religious allies. Russia conducted a similar long campaign to build up Arab proxies and prod them to attack Israel before the Six Day War.

Is ISIS going to overrun the cities previously controlled by the Syrian free army that Russia is attacking? Yikes.

Can anyone imagine a US combat aircraft getting blessed by priests?

The Ruskies have the balls to do what is needed to be done. “PC” has no direct Russian translation, apparently.

All rebels there are jihadi, if you are bombing an anti government force there, you are just fine. The idea that only ISIS is bad is a US State department delusion shared by no sane person.

The Russian Orthodox Church has been the only support Syrian Christians have had and this is a primary interest of the church - protecting Syrian Christians. Christians from Western countries, including the American churches, have turned their back on them.

The Russian Orthodox Church wants to take Jerusalem.

I'll support them to re-take Constantinople first.

“I’ll support them to re-take Constantinople first.”

But Turkey is a wonderful and good strategic partner with NATO.

How do you say “Go Russia!” in Russian? End the Civil War, Crush ISIS (Dash) and rebuild Syria (with a little help from Iran etc...) We wouldn’t finish the Job so Putin will. Constantinope will have to wait. Greece would be a good target. Russian pilots need some combat training.

They tried.

The “West” stopped them and allied with the muslims.

It was called the Crimean War.

With now Crimea under Russian control again, and Russia on the the move we might be seeing the Crimean War II.

‘How do you say “Go Russia!” in Russian?’

I think they used “Slava!”, which means ‘glory’, or simply “urrah!”.

I’m not ready to cheer yet, but I am happy to see some of Obama’s and McCain’s pet jihadis going up in smoke.

This situation is very complex and dangerous, but I am glad to see these fuses being pulled, and those jihadis sent to their rewards.

Actually in the ecclesiastical sphere, bit more Russian influence over the Patriarchate of Jerusalem might be good — Constantinople has proved useless in getting them to remove the bishop they installed in Qatar, part of the territory of the Patriarchate of Antioch and All-the-East, in plain violation of Orthodox canon law — maybe Moscow could use a bit of clout to get the matter resolved.

Leave Jerusalem to the Jews... taking Constantinople would be more appropriate and welcome.
