LETTER: We want candidates who can deliver in office, not ones with bulleted lists
boston globe ^ | SEPTEMBER 26, 2015

Posted on 09/26/2015 9:37:34 PM PDT by BlackFemaleArmyColonel

BEING A New Hampshire resident, and a hard target for 2016 presidential hopefuls, I have been reading more and more articles on the qualities and shortcomings of Donald Trump. Like many Americans, I considered Trump as someone who was spoiled by wealth, and from an early age, and I took him about as seriously as others take his hair. Recent articles in the media have made me reconsider those assumptions.

I don’t support his views on immigration and basic civil rights, but I do recognize his ability to solve business problems and paralyze political opposition. The media, on the other hand, continue to criticize him for a lack of detail, and demand the requisite candidate manifesto — the so-called multipoint plan — that will solve all our social and political ills.

I began my young engineering career in the Apollo program. I don’t recall President Kennedy or anyone else releasing a multipoint plan to get to the moon by the end of the decade. It required trust in a leader’s ability and a massive bureaucracy of thoughtful people working toward a goal.

We need to find elected officials, whether Trump or someone else, who can solve our problems when in office, and not candidates who spoon-feed bullet points to anxious journalists.

Very detailed and articulate analysis of Ted Cruz. I’ve seen it before and read the resume. He appears to be a stalwart conservative and has all the bona fides to back it up. However, in his adult life he has not done anything in the “real world”. He has not worked in the private sector. He has not built a business, made payroll, hired/employed/fired employees to/from a payroll that is of his own doing, not on taxpayer dollars. There is no doubt he has a tremendous understanding of the Constitution, probably better than any other candidate. However, like it or not, fair or not, he’s been in the Senate, even during a majority, a weak, feckless Senate (I know, McConnell is the leader, not Cruz)and also made several questionable votes and is not far off from the GOPe on issues such as amnesty. He is most known for “shutting down the government” (which I supported) and reading Green Eggs and Ham during a filibuster. He is a pariah. He allowed the media and the RINO leadership to paint a narrative about him. He appears to be just “part of the problem” with the exception of a core constituency. His polling numbers show that. Great crowds of conservatives in the hundreds to maybe a thousand. He’s got to be able to able to the masses, or at least enough of them, to get out of the primaries let alone the general. Perhaps he will be able to do that.

Trump, warts and all, lacking Cruz’ conservative bona fides is an open book. He will say it like it is and he is known for doing things and getting things done. He has not been involved in politics and is not beholden to any special interest groups. He cares about America (yes, and himself) and making it great again and fixing the serious problems we’re facing after a generation of the uniparty and the last six years of transformation into a European style socialist state. He has the charisma and stones to take on the media and the establishment. Just look what has happened in the last 100 days. The narrative would NEVER have been on illegal immigration and building a wall. Fox News has been shown for what they are and many “conservative” pundits are now showing their true colors. Trump doesn’t let anyone paint a narrative of him. He is the narrative. He exhibits leadership and an “in charge” persona. We so desperately need that both in this country and across the world. Because of his outsider position, he is appealing to segments that Cruz would never be able to reach, fair or not. I think Cruz can be most effective in an AG or SOCTUS position, perhaps VP where he can learn to work on his appeal and delivery. No doubt, if Cruz is the nominee, I will support him. I don’t think he is the answer at this time. This is a very different time and I think the last 100 days has shown this.

What you criticize Trump for not passing legislation?! Just how prior to being elected would he have done that? He apparently is smart enough to surround himself with accomplished people like Senator Sessions.

I won’t stay home but I will vote on all issues and offices except President. It might be amazing to see the number of ballots cast far exceed the votes gotten by a RINO or the democrap candidate- that should speak clearly enough that we are sick of elite RINO.

I beg to differ, we need politicians who will let us solve our own problems.......................

We want freedom and responsibility.

“We need a candidate who has a proven ability to make government work.”

Which candidate do you suppose fits your requirements? Jeb! and Kaisch claim that ability, but amnesty for illegals comes with them. Then, the country is over. Make your choice.

I like the way Trump stays consistent in giving it to the media and busting up the GOPe. He's definitely delivering on this. Trump is the man of this election cycle.

All Trump HAS is Bullet points.. ALL TALK.. He hasn’t proved what he is willing to do... No vetting.. no testing, no history except for the BAD HISTORY..

If you can read, and have the ambition to become informed, read his book: "Time to Get Tough." Furthermore, watch his interviews with Forbes, Hewett, Hanity and others. You might get a clue.

If George Stephanopoulos was around after President Kennedy's May 25, 1961 speech announcing his goals for taking a man to the moon

STEPHANOPOULOS: Now let's talk to the man himself. President Kennedy joins us by phone. A lot to talk about this week, Mr. President.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: Thank you for having me, George.

STEPHANOPOULOS: I want to begin right away with the speech you made before a joint session of Congress to set the United States on a course to the moon.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: Yes

STEPHANOPOULOS: In that speech, you said, and I quote, "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Mr. President, I have to ask, exactly how are we going to do it?

What are the specifics here?

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: George, it's called management. The specifics will be worked out. We have to do it.

STEPHANOPOULOS: -- but you don't say...

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: We don't...

STEPHANOPOULOS: -- how.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: Excuse me, George?

STEPHANOPOULOS: You declare you're going to do it, but you don't say how. I still haven't heard the specifics on how you're going to get this done, but I'm going to move on...

The president isn’t a dictator who can order stuff done.

There was a time, not so long ago, that I would have agreed with that statement. The definition of the office of the president has been changed, he (yes, or she) can dictate to the degree that the other two branches (or, alternatively, "we the people") will allow it. It's been working pretty well for the last nearly seven years.

We may not yet be at the end of the redefinition.

It makes no difference, I have made my decision, no more Professional Politicians.

Ted Cruz and all the other so called Conservatives had a chance to show where they stood on the Iran Deal.

The only Senator with any guts who has been consistent about the Iran Deal and it’s dangers is Senator Tom Cotton, the only one who voted against the Corker Bill. He happens to be my Senator.

Where was Ted Cruz and the others, well they voted for it. If Tom Cotton was running he would get my vote. I hope it’s a Trump/Cotton ticket.

As far as I am concerned Ted Cruz is just another Pre-Packaged Politician running for President, the Big Question is, who owns him.

I know TRUMPS History and his Histrionics......
Whats OVER-LOOKED is his dealings with democrats and ultra liberals..
You know SUPPORTING them when it suites his fancy..

NOT all who write books can be TRUSTED... to do what they say..
I feel TRUMP is one of those..

He has been a -democrat, independent, republican- several times like a revolving door..

Probably he HAS NO VALUES WORTH counting on..
LIKE: a Used Trump Salesman..

Sure Trump’s money worries them, but Cruz raised way more money than they expected. He has the war chest to be competitive against Bush as well. And Bush simply isn’t polling well. There’s no guarantee they could’ve bought the election for him with or without Trump if the people simply refused to back him.

” However, in his adult life he has not done anything in the “real world”. He has not worked in the private sector. He has not built a business, made payroll, hired/employed/fired employees to/from a payroll that is of his own doing, not on taxpayer dollars.”

You have just shown me that you didn’t read the post in it’s entirety. He has had multiple jobs in the private sector in his adult life from teaching, clerking for law firms and in private law practice. Those jobs were not paid for with taxpayer dollars.

He worked multiple jobs in the private sector while in college. He also formed is own business as a young man when he worked for a water softner company hiring others to work for him, paying wages etc. He learned a lot from doing that and talks about why the little business didn’t succeed. What he learned from that helped to form some of his opinions.

To keep repeating something that isn’t true when you are shown it isn’t true is very troubling.

I never said he was 100% on the money with every vote he made. I think it has been explained over and over again here on FR the strategy that was in play with the treaty vote. If you compare the other candidates who have voting records you will find that he has the best and most conservative of all of the candidates. The one nice thing about not being a politician is that you can say whatever you want people to hear and you have no voting record to come back to haunt you. If you want to put your faith in someone who used to be a dem with no voting record that is up to you.

“not far off from the GOPe on issues such as amnesty. “

I disagree. What is your definition of amnesty? Temporary work permits? And as Trump supporter have said of their candidate “Maybe he can be persuaded or will evolve”. I don’t support more work permits but like I said, compare him to the others. I only have 3 strikes against him on my list. All of the others have plenty more.

You can disagree with me and prefer Trump if you like but please get your facts straight if you are going to criticize another candidate. Ted Cruz has worked in government jobs but he also worked in the private sector in multiple jobs, paid his way through school earning scholarships, working in the private sector and through student loans which he worked to pay back. As for being a pariah in the Congress do you really think Donald Trump would be welcomed with open arms? How well do you think he would have been received if he had been a senator? How well do you think the Congress will receive him as POTUS? You may think he is great but he will face the same difficulties as POTUS as Ted Cruz would. My list of negatives for Donald Trump is much longer than 3 questionable votes and I have a huge trust issue with the man.

As for FOX news I haven’t watched for 4 years now. I didn’t need Donald Trump to show me what FOX was all about. I knew that already. If he does damage to FOX it will make quite a few liberals happy no? It was a dream of theirs to take that network down and discredit it and Trump may just fulfill that dream for them. I see the man much differently than you do. I see him as a pied piper or even maybe a Trojan horse at the worst and probably will be a huge disappointment to his supporters if he is elected. I would not vote for him if he were the nominee. I can only vote for someone who I truly believe is a the most conservative candidate.I also am an independent so feel no party loyalty to vote for whomever the GOP decides upon.

If Donald Trump is elected I sincerely hope that I am wrong and that you are right. For all of our sakes. But if I am right, I will reserve the right to say “I told you so”:)
