President Obama announced a new initiative Friday aimed at having 1 million American schoolchildren learn Mandarin Chinese over the next five years.
The commitment by Obama would see the number of American students learning Mandarin quintuple; 200,000 students across the country are studying Mandarin today. Obama framed the initiative as a chance for the countries to learn more about each other.
"If our two countries are going to do more together around the world, then speaking each other's languages so we can understand each other is a good start," Obama said.

Immediately after 9-11 we realized that Arabic speaking people can also be terrorists (don’t laugh, before that our brilliant government was spending all their time trying to infiltrate anti-abortion groups).
So we desperately needed Arabic translators and we ended up hiring, you guessed it, Arabs. Only problem was that half of them were either spies or sympathized with spies.
So I have no problem with Americans learning Chinese, it certain is a better use of their time than trying to learn math through Common Core.

Obama should lead by example if he feels this is important. How close are Malia and Sasha to fluency in Mandarin? Barack himself could cut back on the golfing and basketball to spend time with a tutor.
First, our most pressing priority is to learn black ghetto language before Chinese. Next would be Tex-Mex Spanish and then we might learn Chinese.
I have an even more brilliant idea! Why don’t the Chinese learn English since is is the general language of the world?

Anyway, if Americans are going to study Mandarin, which written form will they learn? Classical (30,000 characters but 5,000 for basic literacy) or romanized pinyin?
Pinyin, by the way was devised by the communist regime not to achieve greater literacy among the masses (like Ataturk did with romanized Turkish) but to separate modern Chinese from their classical literature & Confucian ethics which were all written classical style.
The New World Order demands it.

We have more than a million Chinese-Americans in our graduate schools now who already speak Chinese.
