Around 70 firefighters in 10 fire engines are battling the blaze at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in London Road.
People attending for prayers were evacuated from the building after the ground and first floors were hit.
Shocked onlookers gathered opposite the mosque, watching a dark plume of smoke billowing out of the building's roof, before they were ushered behind a police cordon.
Ambulance officials say one man has been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation but there are so far no other injuries reported.
Up to 10,000 people can fit inside the mosque but it is not known how many were in the building at the time.

So nearly 150 comments so far, all hysterically amusing with their roast pork jokes, or highly erudite about how Muslims don’t wash with water (where do these ignoramuses come from?) and not one of them spots the most blindingly obvious point of all.
This is an Ahmadiyah mosque, the reviled branch of Islam that rejects fundamentalism and bigotry and which preaches a message of peace and tolerance.
Around the world Ahmadiayahs are persecuted and loathed by mainstream Islamists.
It has long been a matter of great affront to Indian and Pakistani Muslims (of whom there is no shortage in Britain) that the biggest mosque in Europe is an Ahmadiyah mosque so if this fire is intentional I dare say the culprits were mainstream Islamists attacking these peaceful, tolerant apostates.
But hey, I have just wasted 10 minutes of my life explaining facts when dumb jokes and ignorant comments are clearly what is required.
That seems to change quite a lot. Looking to the (now) obvious source might be a good thing.
I pray this was arson. Let the Brit’s wake up and burn Islam’s barracks down.

It probably was arson, but given that the Muslims who worship at this mosque belong to a peaceful, tolerant sect of Islam that preaches tolerance and peace and opposes bigotry and fundamentalism, the arsonists are probably the same Islamists who have persecuted and murdered these people all around the world and regard the worshipers as devils and apostates.
Are you so sure you are praying for the arsonists now?
I do not care. Any burned mosque is a good mosque. But it seems there wasn’t much damage.
