Professors make much more than $30K. Depending on their rank they may go as high as $250K...and that is for teaching a couple classes several months a year usually with teaching assistants and research assistants). Those with tenure get a year off with 1/2 pay every seventh year. It is a rough life, no?

I couldn't get past the pay wall at the link, so I didn't read the entire story. But if Smith-Soto is a full-time “senior lecturer” in journalism at UTEP, I would guess he makes $60-80K per academic year and teaches 3 courses per semester. He wouldn't have tenure at that rank, and he most likely wouldn't be entitled to a sabbatical.
