Congressional leaders are asking Department of Justice to investigate the detention and arrest of Ahmed Mohamed, the teenager who was arrested after teachers thought his homemade clock resembled a bomb. In a letter to Attorney General Lorretta Lynch, Congressman Mike Honda (D-Silicon Valley), Representative Keith Ellison, and Representative Andre Carson urged Lynch to look at any discriminatory practices that might have been a factor in Mohameds arrest.
Profiling and mistreatment of an individual based on presumed or actual faith or ethnicity has no place in the World, let alone in the United States of America, Honda wrote in the letter, which was signed by 29 members of Congress.
The letter goes on to say that Mohamed was denied his civil rights when his requests to speak to his father were rejected by police at MacArthur High School and later at the juvenile detention center where he was held.
In Texas, a child is entitled to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during a police interrogation or questioning.
His arrest should serve as a wake-up call for everyone to step back and reflect on our fears and our rushes to judgment, said Carson.
No matter what their background, our children do not deserve to face the suspicion that so many of us have faced.
In addition to congressional leaders, Mohamed has also received the support of leaders in the tech industry since news of his arrest broke.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg invited the young teen to visit the company headquarters, and, earlier this week, Mohamed attended the Google Science Fair in the Bay Area where he met Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
His next stop appears to be the White House, and it appears hes taking his clock with him.
I cant wait to get my clock back & take it to the #WhiteHouse, Mohamed tweeted Tuesday evening. @BarackObama the invite is an honor, looking forward to meeting you!
Only thing missing was the C-4 and blasting cap.
I suspect the last thing Ahmed Mohamed’s family wants is scrutiny of the FBI.
Yup. And one of these days, the attacks will be more signification and on the scale of 9/11.
Apparently a few loan wolf attacks are okay. However, another 1000 civilians killed might be more of a concern. Then again, apparently not.
“If he gets his clock back and it gets modified between then and his visit to Obie, and something bad happens as a result, I will be the first to LAUGH about it.”
I’ll be the second.
That is what this really all about. That is why no bullying is allowed, you can't pretend to shoot someone with your finger, and you can't bring suspicious packages into the schools.
Columbine predates 9/11.
Third for me.
In a just world, those creeps would be blown up by a teenage muslim.
No word yet on the contents of the cloth bag.
Still in top 5!
Is this suppose to be a sympathy article or what? If you don’t want to be treated as someone questionable, don’t bring a fake bomb to high school! Had this kid been allowed to go throughout the day, toting what looks like a briefcase with a digital countdown counter and no one questioned him, there would be hundreds of lawsuits from all the other parents who expect the school will protect their children!! When I was on tour and saw this so called clock, I would have suspected it to be a attache case bomb. Nothing else but a bomb. How can anyone else see anything other than that? Semper Fi

Had he attempted to bring his bomb into the White House in the first place, he would be 60 before he got out of jail.
Be careful what you ask for.
Don’t Mess With Texas.
Well I hope they get scrutiny from the FBI.
Little Mo and his creepy sister too. She was suspended from school three years ago because of a bomb threat.
Especially since the security types will be loath to search the darn “clock” now that it is a point of contention.
You can bet the Secret Service will go over his “homemade clock” with a fine toothed comb. He and the Kenyan can compare their hoaxes on the US.
