As an adviser embedded with a Saudi unit in Desert Storm (15 of us in a Battalion) I was told that due to their tribal nature not to be surprised if some prisoners were treated very well and even released while others might be tortured and murdered.

We were reminded of our responsibilities under the Geneva and Hague Conventions but also cautioned that reporting, or even acknowledging that crimes had been committed might result in us being buried in the same hole as the victim.

I did my Ray Charles impression... I didn't see nuffin.

My Reservist coworker got deployed to Afghanistan as an infantryman at the village level. He told us about “Man-Boy Love Thursday” when Afghan men with money went searching for bacha bazi boys. He was sickened by the practice but could do nothing about it.

When I naively asked why the men weren’t searching for young women, he replied that Islam teaches men to distrust women & to revile women for their bodily nature.

“Women for babies, boys for pleasure” once again.

Ray Charles probably didn’t pronounce “nothing” as “nuffin”. Just because he was black didn’t mean he was inarticulate.
