Yeah, I could see some advantage to that, but I don’t think it outweighs the BIG disadvantage: if you only get one shot, and you have to make it count, with this device in place you are up the creek.

There are other non lethal alternatives and this device is a one shot deal.

You get one non-lethal shot. The magazine still is full less one.
So start with the “real” gun.
Snap on the “air bag” if the officer thinks it is warranted.
Fire the warning shop, no need to take sights off the criminal.
Fire deadly shots as required.
If you come upon a firefight to start with, the pistol is still in original form.

I’m speaking of the situations where you have to make your first shot count, because you may not get an opportunity to take another shot. Those are situations police need to be prepared for.
Now, if the device needs to be popped on before use, and doesn’t stay on the weapon when it is holstered, then that isn’t an issue. However, then the device also has less usefulness, because it will take time to prep this device before use, whereas with something like a taser, you can just draw it and use it.
It will be like a taser, over used. More apt to be used by bully cops.
This device almost has to affect the projectile’s trajectory making it very inaccurate. So some cop fires it at a suspect, aiming at the chest at fairly close range, and puts the guy’s eye out or harming an innocent bystander.
Just not a good idea. Keep the taser, get rid of this poor idea.

When you first pull the gun out of the holster, this device is not in place. If you need that immediate first shot, it is still a normal gun.
The ping-pong ball and assembly is carried like an extra magazine. It snaps in place after the officer has decided the situation warrants its use.

The advantage I see is after the use. Unlike the taser, if not sufficient, you are aimed and ready to end the threat with lethal force if required.
What’s the point of shouting “less lethal!”? Is that for whoever might be making a video?
so we take a small fast moving object and transform it into a large caliber heavy object ... just like the mini-ball of civil war fame. So instead of punching a hole in an arm or a leg, we simply crush the underlying bone and tissue. During the civil war, this is what caused so many amputations.
