Years ago I was talking to a retired state department flunky who had been in the middle east. When I expressed fear that the Ayatollahs might get the bomb, he swished with one hand on his hip and the other with a finger held high and said, “Russia had the bomb for decades and they never used it. Why shouldn’t the Muslims have the bomb? You’re a ridiculous Eurocentrist.” I think my jaw dropped. I excused myself and went to talk to somebody else.
