White House dismisses GOP, says Iran deal in effect next week
Washington Examiner ^ | 9/10/15 | Nicole Duran

Posted on 09/10/2015 1:55:23 PM PDT by markomalley

The White House insisted on Thursday that Congress has just one week to thwart the agreement between Iran and six world powers to curb its nuclear program under the timetable Congress established for reviewing the deal, despite new GOP arguments that the 60-day clock it has for reviewing the deal should never have started.

If Republican lawmakers are unable to secure a veto-proof majority rejecting the deal by then, the "international community" will begin implementing the accord, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday.

"[T]hey essentially had 60 days to play the spoiler," Earnest said about Republicans who want to jettison the deal that China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and the United States negotiated with Iran to stunt Tehran's nuclear weapons program.

Under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act passed in May, Congress had 60 days to weigh the contract and its annexes. But now that enough Senate Democrats support implementing the treaty to prevent Republicans from blocking it, House Republicans are considering suing the Obama administration to prevent the agreement from taking effect.

"[I]t's not a coincidence, that — what we've taken to the calling the 'Tortilla Coast' gambit — is something that emerged just hours after it became clear that this resolution of disapproval would not move through the United States Senate," Earnest said. He was picking up on his colleague Eric Schultz's description Wednesday that GOP lawmakers "hatched" the idea of a lawsuit over drinks at a well-known restaurant near the House office buildings.

"Now the House, again because of this plan, this gambit, has decided to abandon that approach and to consider three other pieces of legislation that the Senate has made pretty clear they're not going to consider," Earnest said about Speaker John Boehner's decision to first have his colleagues vote on a sure-to-fail resolution approving of the nuclear deal.

"[T]his obviously is not the first time we've seen Republicans who are unsuccessful in trying to prevent the president from doing something using their official duties as a member of Congress resort in desperation to a piece of litigation," Earnest said about the proposed lawsuit.

Earnest stressed that although the United Nations can begin following through with the agreement on Sept. 17, Tehran does not get relief from punishing economic sanctions until it lives up to its obligations.

"That means reducing their nuclear stockpile … rendering harmless their plutonium reactor at Arak; it means essentially disconnecting thousands of centrifuges; it means cooperating with the IAEA," Earnest said referring to the International Atomic Energy Agency. "It's only after those steps have been taken and verified that the international community will move forward with offering sanctions relief to Iran."

Republicans would base their lawsuit on the grounds that they have not been given copies of the agreement documenting what the IAEA and Tehran worked out for exactly how inspections and verification of Iran's compliance will be carried out.

"If there's any member of Congress that says, 'well I would like to know what is in that agreement,' they can contact the administration and in an appropriate, classified setting can be briefed on the contents of that agreement," Earnest said about the ancillary documents. "There's no mystery to, at least to members of Congress with a security clearance, as to what's included in that agreement," he said.

Do you really believe the GOPe would have lost had they listened to their most reliable base voters, rather than insult it and instead prostitute themselves to their big time contributors?

Since thats exactly what they did, how can you blame the voting base for their loss?

It matters not. Obama will never allow Israel to defend itself.

Well, they may take out Obama first. They have the balls to do it.

I am NOT a Mitt supporter- by any stretch of the imagination, however-

This is (apparently- & this is the first I’ve ever head of it, so I googled) up in the air & (at least) appears to come from the left. I don’t know. I was a Gingrich supporter.

Mitt’s not running (not yet, anyway) & I stand (with regret & frustration) by what I said. No matter how much I might agree with social conservative causes, cutting off our noses to spite our faces only harms everyone & we wind up with much worse than what we were trying to avoid.

(I did vote for Romney in 2012. There wasn’t, technically, a ‘’dime’s worth of difference’’, but I wanted 0bama gone more than I objected to Romney.)

i do, skeeter. We are very close to 50-50 in this country. Financial conservatism (even considering the gibsmedats- in fact, especially considering them) will win with more of the independents than social causes. People are very, very indoctrinated & it’s going to take a while for them to come to their senses, if a majority ever does. That is not to say roll over & give up the fight, by any means, but it’s crazy to destroy a candidate who is actually far better than the opposition & who *might* move things in a better direction, just because he isn’t the ‘’anointed one’’.

There’s no excuse for the GOPe insulting anyone, ever. I’m really surprised at the vitriol being lobbed back & forth by the supporters AND the pundits’ editorials go without saying. Eegad, what a climate! No wonder so many people just tune out. (I have made my choice & am ready to tune out, myself. That is a 90% probability, going up).

I don’t know who ‘’your’’ candidate is, but at this point the only candidate who is not prostituting himself is Trump (& I am NOT proselytizing for Trump- at least not right now) Nobody has ‘’clean hands’’ anymore. That’s the problem.

I cited why I blame this *portion* of the voting base. Do ‘’reliable’’ voters sit out an election when their preferred candidate isn’t chosen?

Sundance at The Conservative Treehouse has laid the situation out perfectly. We are in the situation we are in. (”it is what it is’’)
We need to quit being our own worst enemy- but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Tell me, WHY do the democrats feel no compunction to separate social from financial issues, as RINOs and moderates constantly do?

They never apologize, even though on social issues most Americans are clearly on our side. And they still win.

What I would give for a party of fighters that spoke for me the way the democrats speak for the left. Instead of the gaggle of bland poltroons we're stuck with.

Apportioning blame on the internet doesn’t help matters. What’s on the streets of DC? Crickets.

I agree. The smug, holier than thou, uppity jerks who stayed home because pure white was not available IS the reason for this debacle. Shame on those and you know who you are.

The courts NEVER settle a dispute like this. The courts won’t touch it.

“It matters not. Obama will never allow Israel to defend itself.”

I suspect that when the time come Israelis will be relatively unconcerned about what Obama “allows.”

Why would Obama start obeying the law now?

Has the country ever experienced such lawlessness? Will banks follow Congress’ orders or Obama’s?

The anarchy grows.

I have no idea. I gave up trying to figure out where the left is coming from a looong time ago. I guess they’re influenced by all the Marxist BS, but really, I think they’re just warped/ mentally defective. If it’s filthy, if it’s ‘’shocking’’, if it’s contrary to the norm- or what was once the norm, they’re all over it. They run it into the ground & break it off.

I believe they ‘’win’’ because of ‘’by any means necessary’’. They lie, they cheat, manipulate & exploit EVERYTHING. Nothing is sacred. They are relentless & utterly without scruples.

That is just my assessment. Someone with a greater understanding of mental health & human behavior could probably do better.

There has been no Amendment to the Constitution.

This is a treaty, regardless of what Obama calls it.

Obama and the Senate are working in a coordinated fashion, ignoring their duty and their oath, and allying themselves with an enemy.

$150 BILLION DOLLARS is a lot of money. The Obama and Kerry “Foundations” fully intend to get their cut of it.

Money laundered into their hands as the price for getting the "Great Satan" to take a nap. Judas worked a lot cheaper than this lot.

The truth is that Obama wasn't elected. It isn't who casts the votes (vote early, vote often, por Espanol numero dos) it is who counts the votes

Rampant voter fraud put the greatest fraud since Piltdown Man in the White House, and NONE in a position to object meaningfully did squat.

I hope you’re right but Israel will need vital support from the U.S. Its an incredibly complex operation. I cannot imagine any scenario where Obama will grant the intelligence and logistical assistance necessary. And with each passing day, the military challenge becomes more difficult for Israel .
