Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is now tearing into one of the rivals he long declined to criticize: retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
In a CNN interview on Thursday, the real-estate magnate attacked Carson's religiosity, persona, qualifications for the presidency, views on abortion and even his medical record.
"He was a doctor, perhaps an OK doctor, by the way. You should check that out too. We're not talking about a great [doctor]. He was an OK doctor," Trump said.
As a doctor, Carson drew national attention at John Hopkins "by conducting a succession of operations that had never been performed successfully," according to The New York Times, "most famously planning and managing the first separation of conjoined twins connected through major blood vessels in the brain."
Trump said he was criticizing Carson because the retired brain surgeon took a shot at him the day before. CNN reported that Carson was asked at an event how he was different from Trump, and he responded by comparing their faith in God.
"Probably the biggest thing I've realized where my success has come from and I don't in anyway deny my faith in God," replied Carson, a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life, and that's a very big part of who I am. I don't get that impression with him."
Some political observers have suggested that Trump could struggle to win over evangelical voters because of his casual public approach to his own religion. For example, Trump has said he doesn't seek forgiveness from God and referred to Holy Communion as eating "my little cracker" and drinking "my little wine."

Carson took a swing at Trump. I heard it with my own ears.
Trump swung back with something just as silly as Carson said.
Carson said that unlike Trump that he, Carson, is the a really humble guy. (I’ve always thought humble guys did not point at themselves as the picture of humility.)
So, Trump responds by saying that Carson was a doctor...an OK doctor.
Which comment was sillier?
Carson was a premier expert (if not the premier expert) in pediatric neurosurgery. Which means he was called in to handle (and consult on) the toughest of tough cases. Very high risk surgery means things can go wrong, and when things go wrong, people sue (regardless of whether the surgeon was actually at fault).
Churchill could be quite a boor at times too.
Trump has GREAT humility. HUGE humility. The BEST humility.
I like Cruz, too, and Trump is not a democrat. He’s a Trumpican.
AMAZING humility!
You would not BELIEVE how humble he is!
In fact, I’m a quarterly donor to Cruz. And have been for a while now.
This was an unnecessary hit. I hope he backs off Carson as a doctor. Trump learns quickly and this was a bad move.
Part of his charm.
Lady Astor: “Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your tea.”
Churchill: “Ma’am, if you were my wife I would drink it.”
Trump has spent his entire life surrounded by people who tell him how great he is and those who don't are kept away. I think he is really uncomfortable being out of his element like he is now.
“How many OK doctors can separate siamese twins connected by the brain?”
One scalpel, one cut and two band aids. Not that difficult.
I don't think so..but he did study the art of the one-liner under Joan Rivers...seriously.
It's a shame Joan isn't around to see all this..lol
One of Joan's famous jabs at Elizabeth Taylor,- "A Rose-Bowl float with a SAG card" hahaha
I’m waiting for the report that Donald Trump has exploded from all the hot air that has accumulated in his head. He is attempting to make himself an even bigger big-shot by trivializing every other person who dares to even think of competing against him . No doubt next we’ll hear that he is getting the Nobel Prize for being the most self-absorbed man in the history of the world. Actually his behavior is extremely juvenile.
Carson loves to give the impression that he alone separated Siamese twins. I liked him at first, but his inflated poll numbers have went to his head. A race between Ben Carson and Hillary Clinton would be a blowout for Clinton of monumental proportions.
Trump is not only unfit for the White House; I wouldn't have him at my dinner table.
And I say that as no fan of Ben Carson.
Same here.
pretty phony humility to be questioning someones faith in God.
Agree. Carson should’ve left this one alone.
Excellent point.
Pointing out how humble one is is ironic.
