And then that candidate has to win the vote for speaker. So assuming all the Dems vote for Pelosi then it's another situation where 29 Republicans could prevent McCarthy or Scalise or whoever from being elected.

That's right. Pelosi could win a plurality during the voting, but not a majority unless Republicans defect. However, if Republican "leaders" offer up a Boehner-lite acolyte, we would want those 29 to vote for someone else until the caucus offers up someone agreeable to all Republicans. Otherwise, it's a Pyrrhic victory for Republicans - ousting Boehner but not ultimately changing the dynamic in the House.
