What we know as political liberal today is an attempt to outwardly effect charity, but to base it upon pride. A fundamentally uglier thing could scarcely be imagined. It is the situation that C. S. Lewis described of those who torment us “for our own good” doing it endlessly, because it happens with the [superficial] approval of their own consciences.
Because I know this, I can be more charitable personally towards liberals. It’s easy to get a “conservative pride” thing going, forgetting for the moment that if it were not for the grace of God to all, we all would have already dissolved away into hell, both high and low. There was no “conservatives exception” section to the original human rebellion, the fall.
