What Hill Do We Die On, Then? (Kim Davis and Religious Liberty)
American Conservative ^ | SEpt 4, 2015 | Rod Dreher

Posted on 09/04/2015 4:15:38 PM PDT by yongin

have said these past couple of days that as gay rights and the ideology at its heart continues to conquer our culture, I expect us small-o orthodox Christians to have to take a hard, sacrificial stand against the state and society, for the sake of religious liberty. Kim Davis’s situation, I’ve said, is not the hill to die on.

The reason for this is certainly contestable, but here it is, in a nutshell.

1. Kim Davis’s position is unwinnable. Nobody seriously expects her to get gay marriage overturned, or even to succeed in carving out a special zone of protection for public officials who, for reasons of conscience, refuse to carry out lawful decisions of the courts. Even if we believe that the Obergefell decision lacks moral legitimacy, there can be no doubt that as a matter of legal procedure, the Supreme Court’s decision is the law. Our side lost that battle decisively. Kim Davis’s stance, while it may be personally courageous, is going to result in another defeat, because it cannot be otherwise in our system. The only point of backing it is to flip the bird to the state and to the broader culture — something I have great sympathy for, but it’s a pointless gesture that can only hurt us in the battles to come.

Ya’ll have been praying for America to wake up. Well, they did. The issue is illegal immigration & Trump by virtue the he had the courage to say it!

We need to start winning, Gay Marriage is not the hill. 42 years later and heinous videos later and nothing has been done about abortion. These are not the winning issues. Sorry, but they are not.

A touch point for public outrage. All the wonks and overthinkers seem to overlook this. When people know they aren’t alone, they will get bolder and if, to complete the “legal” picture, something like a constitutional amendment is called for, it becomes far more likely.

How can it end in defeat? She is doing as her faith leads her to do. That's never a defeat or a loss. Perhaps others will feel inspired to follow their faith more closely, that's not a loss. She is fighting battles bigger than what is seen.

Here it is: proof that illegal immigration is the winning issue!

Wrong. The battle of the Alamo was also unwinnable, but it was still worth fighting. We are facing pure evil and a blatant violation of the First Amendment. Even ignoring the fact that the Supreme Court ruled illegitimately, the First Amendment still morally (and under any sane legal theory) trumps that Court ruling. We stand up for what its right because it is time to fight for every inch of ground, winnable or unwinnable. I play Churchill's "fight on the beaches" speech daily, and he was right, even though things seemed bleak at the time as he faced the same forces that we face today, just with a different label.

I think people are getting tired of Marquis of Queensbury rules here.

If it takes a constitutional amendment, once people start becoming used to not being boxed in by self fulfilling prophecy, forces will arise to make it happen.

Yeah, this is my hill.

Because if America is destined to be a completely deviant, pervert nation, promoting its evil around the world (as Obama is already doing with his homo-centric agenda, not to mention our own putrid, depraved pop-culture), I’m more than comfortable in seeing the country completely ripped apart and die in flames.

By the conventional thought, yes (and Trump even proved it).

But we have something worse than human foreigners here. We have now snuggled up to demons.

If Obama can gin up a bunch of false outrage, why can’t we call for some genuine outrage.

For what it’s worth, the world “gay marriage” rage didn’t begin with the USA. It’s more like it moved in with us.

The real problem is big government. When government is small and has little impact on your life you can vote with your feet (and pocket book) to go where you get what you want. But when the central government imposes one-size-fits-all on everyone, then people do not have the ability to vote with their feet.

Where ya going to go?

I have said for many years that the greatest enemies of social conservatives are liberal Republicans. If you are not willing to fight with us on this, then you are no better than a liberal Republican. And don’t expect us to come running when you need help on your favorite issues. You are either for us or you are against us.

Right now people can decide where the line is for themselves. It will probably come to apoint where many identify the samme line and begin assisting one another directly.

You know, WW2 vets didn’t ask their follow fighters what religion they followed, or if their girl got PG would he do the honorable thing or find a person to provide an abortion. WW2 vets had a common enemy and fought together to defeat it.

That is all this is. Finding the common enemy.

Yes, and as long as we’re a nation that legally recognizes this sick, demented depravity of homo-marriage, my interest in the actual preservation of the republic is nil.

I’m repetitious, but I can’t help it. I’m just in awe of how much this has altered my lifelong personal relationship with this country. A country I was willing to give my life for, throughout most of my adult existence... to a country that I really have no inclination to do anything for anymore. A country and a culture that has grown so foreign and so grotesquely antagonistic to all the things that once instilled in me all that former love and patriotism, that it just makes me want to vomit.

I can’t even fly the flag anymore. The mere thought makes me queasy. As long as this is a perverted Homo-America, I can’t get myself to fly it.
