Actually, being fluent in Spanish is VERY useful in the Western Hemisphere because most countries south of the US-Mexico border do speak some form of the language. As such, being fluent in the language means you can easily travel throughout Mexico, Central America and South America outside of Brazil. (Interestingly, many Brazilians do try to learn Spanish because it is very necessary given most the countries that border Brazil speak this language.)

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that the candidates are running for President of the United States, which is an English speaking country. Mastering English is an important skill for that position, mastering Spanish is not. It is not like we don’t have translators. I am tired of republican politicians acting like democrats and pandering to various ethnic groups. If Jeb had any sense, he would worry more about trying to impress people that may actually vote republican than an ethnic group that will likely vote 70% against the republican candidate. BTW, I live in Texas which is in the Western Hemisphere and I have not found my lack of Spanish language skills to be any hindrance at all, maybe it would be in Mexico but I don’t go there.
