Dramatic Rise in Crime Casts Shadow on Downtown L.A.’s Gentrification

Crime has jumped across the city this year, but nowhere has the increase been as large as in L.A.'s hippest new domain: downtown.

Here, the forces of rapid gentrification are crashing up against the chronic poverty, homelessness and crime that have long been a part of life in the city center. Police and residents say the influx of new lofts, luxury high-rise apartments, bars and eateries have made these new downtown dwellers easy targets for street crime.

"Those two communities are rubbing up against each other and for some reason it has gotten more aggressive," Mishkind said. "We understand there is a grittiness downtown, but that aggression against other people is not acceptable."

Overall, violent crime in the LAPD's Central Division — which covers parts of downtown, skid row and Chinatown — was up more than 57% through the end of August compared with the same period last year, and property offenses increased nearly 25%, according to police data.

Certain crimes have captured extra police attention. "Creeper" burglars look for unlocked apartments or cars. Organized crews lift unattended purses or smart phones from tables at cafes. Others prowl around apartments, checking for open windows or doors to sneak inside.

...

In more upscale parts of downtown such as Bunker Hill and Little Tokyo the situation is not as grim. But authorities say crime patterns have a way of spreading from rough areas to the edges of more prosperous ones.

The busy stretch of 5th Street between skid row and Pershing Square is a pipeline for drug dealers and people looking to score. Merchandise is frequently stolen from the shelves of markets and clothing stores. Fights break out on the sidewalk in the middle of the afternoon.

I wonder what percentage of the criminals are white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant?

“I’m sure the increase in crime has nothing to do with the tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants openly living with in LA.

Jeb! Bush tells us that illegals are better people than the Americans they are replacing.

Hey "Urban Hipsters"! How's it working out?

Good question to ask Kevin Sutherland

Oh wait, you can't ...

Gentrification just means ripe fruit.

There's more to it than that. There's a genuine hatred of gentrifiers in a lot of gentrifying neighborhoods. They come in, drive up prices and the costs of living (including where property taxes are set according to appraised land/structure values) and in doing so break up and drive the existing (and invariably lower-income minority) communities out.

I was an urban pioneer in Atlanta, when we moved into
a warehouse it was a rough neighborhood but we got left
alone. In ten years it was all lofted out and yuppies moved
in, then we got robbed, cause the yups were leaving their
cellphones and computers in their cars, thought they were
safe. Finally had enough and moved to the country.

You know the story about the country...

A guy went to see his friend who “lived in the country”
He drove until the pavement ended and it was just a dirt
road, then that ended and it was just a path finally he
got to his friends house and there was a sign on the door
that said...”Be back in two weeks, gone to the country.”

Wish I had planned ahead and had more land, and I’m not
as far in the mountains as I would have liked but it beats
the alternative.

Stay safe, watch your six.

Why did you include a psychadelic image of Mister Ed saying, “Skid row”?
