Something, or someone, burned the police vehicle he was driving.

Also, the words "exploded" and "explosion" are often a matter of perspective - one man's "explosion" is another man's fast-moving conflagration.

Also, speaking of "reading critically", the original article states: Police officials say the cruiser caught fire after being shot at.

It doesn't say anything about a car exploding.
