As Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican presidential race, frustration and panic have become high enough to make some inside the party Establishment pine for a candidate they roundly rejected as recently as January: Mitt Romney. Romney himself has become one of Trumps most vocal detractors inside the party. Hes someone to whom civility means a lot. The whole Trump thing really bothers him, a close Romney adviser told me and some Romney-ites are only too happy to talk up the prospect of their man jumping into the race if the Establishment fails to stop Trump, whose support in Iowa and New Hampshire is currently greater than Jeb Bush's, Scott Walker's, Marco Rubio's, Chris Christie's, and John Kasich's combined.
Mitt wants to run. He never stopped wanting to run, a senior member of his 2012 team told me. Other Romney-ites, watching this cycles candidates falling short, feel a sense of vindication after all the attacks they endured after Romney's failed 2012 bid. "These guys like Walker and Perry, they were big deals in their states, but you get them onto the national stage and it's a different story," a former Romney adviser told me. "It's like they were in middle school, and now they're freshmen in high school and they're getting their faces slammed in the toilets." Another former Romney adviser complained about Bush's decision not to go all-in on New Hampshire, a state a moderate must win. "Romney did 100 town halls in New Hampshire from announcement to the primary. It's madness. Bush has done only 23."
In reality, the prospect of Romney jumping back into the race at this late date remains exceedingly slim hes made no visible signs of reassembling his political operation. But he may be able to influence the race more indirectly

I’ve been saying that for over a year. If a RINO is nominated, I vote Dem to cost them two votes.

Mitt, don’t bother. You being “horrified” at Trump means he’s doing something right.

Thank’s for the concern, Mitt, but we already have a candidate that’s better than you to rally around. Ted Cruz.

Bring it on. This would be a wonderful two-fer, to bitchslap Mittens and Yeb at the same time.

Ive been saying that for over a year. If a RINO is nominated, I vote Dem to cost them two votes. Exactly. Staying home costs them one vote. Voting for their opponent costs them two votes. If we are trying to hurt them, why do the job half-way?
The NRA has successfully used this tactic for decades. It works.

Rush Limbaugh Recognizes The GOPe Splitter Strategy
(The GOPe construct to nominate Jeb Bush consists of ten people, ten candidates: Jeb Bush ◾Marco Rubio ◾Carly Fiorina ◾Mike Huckabee ◾Chris Christie ◾John Kasich ◾Rick Perry ◾Lindsey Graham ◾George Pataki and Jim Gilmore.)
[
] Theyre turning to Mitt Romney. Now, what does that tell you? Its more than whats obvious to you. It tells you that as far as the Republican Party officialdom, the RNC, the establishment, whatever you want to call them, those candidates are up there not to really win. Theyre up there to split the anti-Bush vote.
Theyre up there to soak up all of the money Bush doesnt get, and then they are there to drop out eventually when they dont do well, when they cant raise enough money because all of it goes to Jeb because thats the original strategy. Bush is gonna soak up all the money, making it impossible for the others to run.
This was the strategy before Trump got in. And the Republican establishment actually hoped for and wanted a lot of candidates. For example, I think Lindsey Graham announcing was strictly Republican Party tactics. Lindsey Graham knows hes not gonna be elected. Lindsey Graham knows hes not gonna be nominated. But in South Carolina he could do something. He could help siphon some money away from Bush.
See, the point is youve got Bush, the establishment guy, and youve got some junior establishment guys up there. The junior establishment guys are all there to protect Jeb by taking money and votes away from the others who are not part of this, Ted Cruz, Carson, the Scott Walkers

Luckily for us, that describes both parties at the moment, and actually describes the Dems better than it does us.
