Obama picks up more support for Iran deal, needs one more senator to prevail
The Washington Times ^ | 9-2-15 | Stephen Dinan

Two more Democrats announced support Tuesday for President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, putting the White House a single senator away from assuring it can prevent Congress from scuttling the agreement and leaving GOP leaders hoping to avoid an even bigger embarrassment of losing to a filibuster.

With about 10 Democrats still to decide, it’s a lock that at least one of them will back Mr. Obama, giving him the 34 votes needed to uphold his expected veto of a bill to halt the deal.

It will pass like a very large Bowel Movement and the outcome will be the same.

Soon Iran will have ICBMs pointed at Israel and the West.

Soon they will also have many nuclear warheads all thanks to our Muslim Brotherhood & Chief...

The Republicans have betrayed us.

But why?? The Republican Senators know that this will prompt Israel to attack all the Iranian nuke sites with their conventional weapons. Why would they do this?? They are putting not only Israel at risk, but possibly us also!!??

None of that will happen. Israel is going to stop all this chit. They'll have to! You know Israel is not going to let itself be vaporized!!

OK, I see. Tiny, limited and alone Israel is going to take out all of Iran's nuke capability? If they try, Obama will attempt to shoot them down as he favors the Muslims.

IF Israel does act it may be in conjunction with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and other Gulf nations.

WWIII

I wonder if all the democrat moms and dads who voted for obama - - might soon be worried about their kids not growing old now.

Sadly, too many of them only worry about what Obama and his echo chamber tell them. Israel could fry on a nuclear skillet tomorrow and they still won't/can't connect the right dots.

Being trapped in the cliff-bound car with these idiots is bad enough, but the rest of us have the added misery of anticipating the drop and the impact, whereas they are engrossed in misreading the road map.

Israel can't. We discussed this on another thread. We're not talking about an Osirik-type single reactor. We are talking about an archipelago spread across the entire nation, much of it in hardened underground sites. Even IF. Other ME nations helped (they won't) it will require, and a,ways has required, boots on the ground.

Bush had it right. Dual bases in Iraq and Afghanistan are STILL going to be necessary and until Iran and Syria are removed, the threat remains.

Iran has up to nine nuke sites and all nine would have to be attacked and taken out. It's either Israel attacks all nuke sites in Iran - - or - - Israel could be gone. Does anyone think that Israel is going let itself be gone? With emphasis on - - let itself be gone? No, obviously not.
It is a widely accepted view that Israel has 300 + nuclear bombs with approx. 20% of them in their submarines. So again, if Israel is faced with extinction, Israel, as a last resort to avert extinction - will use their nuclear weapons. And poof, Iran and it's nine nuclear sites, underground or not, instantly vaporize. Unground sites would fall in on themselves. Israel will only be delayed until the trade winds are blowing from West to East - towards the mountainous region of Afghanistan to lessen collateral damage.

We might be talking about WW III here, but Israel is not going to just sit back and let itself be gone. Period! Now I'm no military scholar but I'd say this scenario is irrefutable.

Not at all. Democrats live, breathe, eat, sleep and exist for the furtherance of their beloved Party. Nothing else matters.

Israel's stated policy is that it “...will not be the first nation to introduce nuclear weapons into the region”.

What does that mean? The Arab (or Persian) nations have to hit Israel first and then and only then can Israel hit back with what JFK called, a “Full retaliatory response”?

Israel ALWAYS feels that it has to RESPOND, not initiate.

In 1973 the Israeli PM did not preempt a combined Syrian-Egyptian war because she was afraid of losing US and Western support. That cost the Israelis thousands of casualties and nearly, the country.

Throughout the Oslo Peace (War) process, Israel took terror hit after hit from 2000-2002 until she hit back in a big way.

She always feels she has to restrain herself for fear of 45 UN condemnations and now, an enemy US President.

What can she do? Initiate WWIII as many think will happen?

Corker's bill had nothing to do with Congress's authority to approve or dis-approve Obama's Iran agreement.

Corker's bill was about "if and when" congress could re-apply Iranian sanctions that Obama had relaxed or apply additional sanctions.

Corker's bill was an alternative the Kirk-Menendez bill, which was first introduced into the Senate in Dec 2013. Kirk-Menendez gave Congress the authority to pre-emptively apply sanctions. Corker's bill limited Congress's authority on sanctions until after the agreement was consummated.

Corker's bill would win out over Kirk-Menendez because Mossad opposed Kirk-Menendez. It was after the 5 senators traveled to Israel in Jan 2015 that Angus Winn, McCain, and Graham would shift support from Kirk-Menendez to Corker.

Obama vowed to veto either/both bills. It was the negotiations between Corker, Ben Cardin, and Obama that modified Corker's bill such that Obama would not veto it. It was the negotiated agreement between Corker, Cardin, and Obama that shifted the bill from sanctions to approval.

Once Obama said no veto, the conflict would then shift to the floor of the Senate as to which amendments would be filed and who filed the amendments and which amendments would get a vote.

The democrats always wanted the option to approve or disapprove, based on the details of the agreement. But the democrats strongly suspected that the GOP would try to politicize the issue irregardless of what was in the final agreement.

The democrats' suspicions turned out to be true the day after the agreement was signed and large numbers of GOPers publicly opposed the agreement without reading it. That's when the GOP lost.

The bottom line was that the agreement was in the hands of the democrats and 13 of 46 democrats(28%) could kill it. It wasn't just that the GOP agreed to this, AIPAC and J Street also approved it.

Israel ALWAYS feels that it has to RESPOND, not initiate.

But that applied to the past. Now Iran has and still is flat out stating that they are going to destroy Israel. If Israel waits and does nothing and Iran, in the next 6 months or year -manages to get a nuke missile of their own through Israel's air defenses then there wouldn't be anything left. Israel is a "tiny" country and I'd imagine 2 or 3 nukes would take out the whole country. There'd be no one there and nothing to "respond" with.

I don't know what the Israelis would do---but I'm pretty sure they know that even nuke attacks cannot eliminate the Iranian nuclear archipeligo, and that it will take ground troops to secure them (impossible after a nuke attack).

Now, Israel might launch, knowing the radioactive clouds would destroy them too. There aren't good or clean options. If Israel strikes, they will be destroyed by either the fallout or the counterstrikes from other Muslim states.

That's why us losing our most critical jumping off points was strategically idiotic.

I guess it won't be a hassle for you and I to continue our discussion here, as I have nothing else to do other then to sit here relaxing, watching cable, reading articles here and posting replies. And to help us more enjoy our discussion, I'll inject some humor in my replies to keep you, me and the readers smiling. (kind of like nurses and technicians do at hospitals - -occasionally cracking jokes with one another - to give themselves short respites from all the sadness around them)

"...that it will take ground troops to secure them (impossible after a nuke attack)."

Here, you've negated your own statement. By saying that it is impossible to attack Iran after a nuke strike you're saying that that area that has been nuked can not support an attacking force from Israel or any life whatsoever. Well, in that case, the reverse holds true - that since the nuked area can no longer sustain life, then you're actually saying that everything in the nuked zone is dead or gone or - - has flown away. So, likewise all threats from Iran are stopped and there'd be no one left there for Israel to attack.

Now, Israel might launch, knowing the radioactive clouds would destroy them too.

Well, I automatically thought you'd know, but I guess you don't - that in any nuke launch by Israel on individual sites in Iran, Israel would not use their hydrogen bombs as they are by far, way to powerful for each of the small sites they'll be attacking. They'd use smaller strategic nukes (micro nukes) or perhaps they will simply use EMP bombs.

An EMP is a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. An EMP attack has the potential to descimate Iran's electrical and technological infrastructure, effectively sending Iran back to the 19th century. And any left over Iranians walking around in the sand, would be back to hopping on camels to get from water hole to water hole.
As society grows more reliant on electronic devices, it's more vulnerable to an EMP attack.

Israel might launch, knowing the radioactive clouds would destroy them too.

This would not be that big a problem as Israel will naturally wait until the trade winds are blowing from out of the West to the East.
