Washington (AFP) - Billionaire Donald Trump has soared in opinion polls for the Republican presidential primary, but inflammatory anti-immigrant rhetoric could cost him the crucial Latino vote in the 2016 White House race.
"What Trump is doing is political suicide," says Patricio Zamorano, executive director of the consulting firm Infoamericas.info.
Since launching his campaign in June, "The Donald" has catapulted to the top of the Republican polls, ahead of 16 other candidates, and at 28 percent this week he is streaking away from his nearest rival by 16 points.
Immigration has dominated the agenda since then, with Trump, 69, promising to build a wall to keep Mexicans -- who he has attacked as drug traffickers and rapists -- from entering the United States illegally.
He has also promised to deport the more than 11 million people living in the United States illegally and to eliminate their US-born children's right to nationality, which the outspoken Trump sees as a magnet for undocumented immigrants.

But at the same time, the mega-rich developer has drawn anger and scorn from Hispanics, the fastest-growing US minority group, numbering 54 million, and 10 percent of voters.

Cue the “Powerful Latino vote” meme
Shake in your boots whitey in front of the Beeg Men from Oaxaca
Screamed the mouse
Trump isn’t anti-immigrant.
Trump is anti-illegal.
(BIG) difference.
Ramon, you ignorant misguided journoslut. He's not anti-immigrant. He's pro-obeying-the-law.
But you knew that already, didn't you.
Ah Yes! But it’s looking more and more like a winner. lol @ msm
Lessay YOU succeeded in scamperin in, under the wire:
How would it help YOUR wages as a new illegal to know NONE of the rest would be impeded in coming?
I don’t buy that illegals all want OTHER illegals to come.
It’s the same with libs:
They want to be able to move somewhere nice and THEN for all the others to not be able to follow.
Latino citizens aren't thrilled with millions of illegals either.
“Trump is anti-illegal.”
And he is increasingly making that point very clear. This will be critical going forward.
The legal immigrant Americans that vote are against illegal immigration too, I would think.
Always the wishful thinking.
The Ministry Of Propaganda must try to keep confusing immigrants with illegal aliens or their entire narrative falls apart.
Immigrants are people who applied in their home country to be Americans, paid their fees, waited their turn, learned the language and complied with the laws.
Donald Trump is not talking about them.
Trump is talking about illegal aliens who broke into the country and break laws daily to continue their illegal presence.
Trump is not against Latinos. He and like many of people who are citizens are against foreigners entering the U.S. illegally! That is the issue and these people need to be deported.
Many, many hard working Chicanos and legal immigrants resent the Hell out of the wetbacks too.
No one is more anti-illegal-immigrant than legal immigrants.
Taking on ILLEGAL ALIENS in US could be big booster for Trump
Could be. Could also land him in the White House. Most Americans are sick and tired of the mealy-mouthed politicians who do nothing about the illegal alien invasion.
Yeah, he might do as bad as Romney among that demographic. But, OTOH, he might more than make up for it in other demographics.
Not doing anything about illegal immigration will cost us our country if it hasn't already.
LOL. Immigration is a winning issue if it is used like Trump is doing. He is reflecting the the views of the majority of Americans regardless of party. It cuts across partisan lines. Minorities are the worst hit by immigration, legal and illegal/
