Much like Hitler, Benito was also overtly obsessed by his country's ancient "glorious" past and as every first year Latin student knows, invented a "new" party, misusing/corrupting the word "fasces", which was a bundle of wood surrounding an axe, tied with ribbons. This was a symbol of power; especially a symbol of judicial power. ( My goodness, would my old Latin teachers be proud of me, for remembering all of that! )
Both Italy and German, at the time of both Mussolini and Hitler, were rather new nations, only unified for less time than the USA has been a nation! Both were suffering from deep Depressions ( as was most of Europe, at that time ), decimated after a long war, and foundering.
