Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, says his comments were not an endorsement of shoplifting.
A University of Wisconsin-Madison official claims laws against shoplifting are just an excuse to over-police minority communities.
I just dont think that they should be prosecuting cases for people who steal from Wal-Mart, said Everett Mitchell, director of community relations for the university, during an on-campus event. I dont think [with] Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance, they should be using the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?
...
Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, offered shoplifting as an example, suggesting that communities of color may prefer that police refrain from enforcing laws against theft from large retail chains because responding to such crimes leads to an increased police presence in neighborhoods where shoplifting is prevalent.
Mitchell also noted that police generally defend their actions by saying they are merely directing their focus toward high-crime areas, but rejected that explanation, saying, they do that all the time to justify why theyre going to over-police our children.

The IMBECILE wants stores to give everything away FREE! What a JERK!!
Lets all go over to the good professor’s house and ‘shoplift” his possessions to see how he feels about it.
I just KNEW it! He is NOT Amish!!
Just think of how much businesses could save by not needing cash registers!
“communities of color may prefer that police refrain from enforcing laws against theft from large retail chains “
How about how the retail chains would feel about it? Nice of him to be so free with others property.
He’s another member of the entitlement class that feels “other people” should pay for his brothers and sisters barbarity. And yes it is barbarity. It’s classic third world thinking.
BOTH.
Legalize crime, and there will be no more crime.
Who ever thought the solution would be that easy?
Hmmm...textbooks are pretty expensive these days. I wonder if U of W would mind me saving a few pennies on my books for next semester?
Tuition has increased 21-fold since I graduated from UW-Madison. No wonder. We didn’t have a “director of community relations for the university” and all the other useless levels of administration back then.
That actually happened here. Twice, in two different suburbs.
I worked with a man and he told me what happened when he was hired to stop shoplifting.
He caught several shoplifters, and the store manager simply told him that his job was to stop shoplifting without arresting or prosecuting the shoplifters.
He was then pulled off the job by his own boss, and the shoplifters cleaned out the store.
A missionary to Haiti told me what happened there one time.
A man stole something and ran. Almost immediately the Tonton Macoutes were on him and beat him almost to death.
The missionary was horrified!
A local shopkeeper told him that it was necessary, because, if the thief had gotten away with it, all the stores would be looted and no one would have a business there.
“Because well, they have insurance.”
As do many murder victims, including victims in mass murders.
(I get your sarcasm; hope you get mine.)
Yep.
now they give them law degrees.....
which is why I have no respect for the lawyers "profession"....if such idiots can slip by then how hard is it to bet a law degree?.....
Because after all, the merchandise belongs to a capitalist? Maybe the students at UW should just hack the U’s computer and change all the grades to A’s too. That should be OK too.
UW official defends his remarks against prosecuting shoop lifters. Calls it “over prosecution” of minority communities. (And they wonder why their nighborhoods are bereft of decent stores with competitive prices.)
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Also no one should be prosecuted for robbing professors or taking their cars or raping their children.
Not that I'm suggesting people rob Universities or Everett Mitchell, or anything.... just that IF they do, they can get away with it.
Peter Fricke can write the follow ups...
If I owned a chain of retail stores, I would ensure that I had all my outlets pulled out of blighted “over-policed” areas. Let the local residents, who don’t think shoplifting should be a crime, figure out where they are going to purchase their necessities.
Not to my neighborhood near the Ozark Mountains. FSA types visiting there have REALLY bad accidents like slipping and falling into a wood chipper that has been backed up to a catfish pond.
