Here's a historical fact that Donald Trump, and many voters attracted to him, may not know: The last American president who was a trade protectionist was Republican Herbert Hoover.
Obviously that economic strategy didn't turn out so well either for the nation or the GOP.
Does Trump aspire to be a 21st century Hoover with a modernized platform of the 1930 Smoot-Hawley tariff that helped send the U.S. and world economy into a decade-long depression and a collapse of the banking system?
We can't help wondering whether the panic in world financial markets is in part a result of the Trump assault on free trade.
Trump is also now running full throttle on an anti-immigration platform that could hurt growth as well and alienate Republicans from ethnic voters that the GOP needs if it is going to win in 2016.
We call this the Trump Fortress America platform. He clearly sees international trade and immigration as a negative sum game for American workers.
He recently announced that as president he would prohibit American companies like Ford from building plants in Mexico. He moans pessimistically that "China is eating our lunch" and is "sucking the blood out of the U.S.?"
But strategic tax cuts and regulatory relief after the anti-business rule-making assault by Obama, not trade and immigration barriers, are the solution to America's competitiveness deficit.
A draft of Trump's 14-point economic manifesto promises that, as president, he would "modify or cancel any business, or trade agreement that hinders American business development, or is shown to create an unfair trading relationship with a foreign entity."

I guess this is the TDS talking point for the week: DT is Herbert Hoover.
Keep trying. Someday something might stick.
I suppose it's easier to call him names than to tell us where he's wrong.
By saying Protectionism is ABSOLUTE RUBBISH! The trade agreements we have are like a rigged poker game where everyone can cheat but us.
We led the world with Tariffs for over 50 years after World War II. It was only after NAFTA, GATT, etc..., we began are slow slide.
Furthermore, we still pay Tariffs to China and Mexico and they do not. Thats a rigged deal that we will lose.
That type of we Dumb@ss thinking is why our country is going to $hit.
The only people who love it are the corrupt politicians that have sold our people out.
The only time you can have free trade is when EVERYONE is playing by the same rules. Which is impossible. Thus, one of the main reasons why you have tariffs.
You have to be a certified DUMB@SS to believe this Bull $hit!
How the hell can you continue to hope these two-faced tactics of yours will work?
Trump was quoted over and over again saying "we need to save these companies," but you crap all over what could be a legitimate policy discussion by making petulant commentary like "auto union bail outs."
Larry Kudlow is a relic.
Trump’s own words don’t even matter to his supporters. The guy just suggested his pro-abort extremist sister should be on SCOTUS and gay marriage is here to stay.
Somehow they will still pretend he is a conservative. Even though he doesn’t appear to have any conservative beliefs
Demonstrably false. Pew said if Romney got 71% (nearly double the GOP's previous record) of the Hispanic vote, he still would have lost. But had he won and additional 4.25% of the WHITE vote, he would be president. Trump will get FAR more than that.
So Kudlow is lying to you about the need for GOP Hispandering, and he is proposing MASSIVE violations of Federal immigration law to justify it.
How is this "conservative"?
Cokehead FREE Traitor RINO Kudlow LMAO
I don’t agree with everything Trump says or does, but the most importatnt thing in this election is shutting down The Cheap Labor Express. Any other candidate going to do that?
We have one last shot at keeping our country against the combined forces of The Cheap Labor Express, both parties, The Ministry Of Propaganda, some churches and unions.
If we do not stop the illegal alien inundation we will lose our country.
I've highlighted some of the key words.
But dude....two things you seem to not understand. One is that you are a closet socialist apparently.
First, it is not proper for the government to save these companies from their own failures.
Second, it was obvious to anyone paying any attention the GM bail out was really a bail out of the unions - while the tax payer and the lenders got screwed.
exactly
When Trump suggested putting his liberal extremist sister on SCOTUS and that we shut up about gay marriage, his supporters did not care.
He could come out for full socialism and one-party rule and his supporters will not care.
De-regulation didn’t fix everything either.
RR wasn’t the Second Coming. He was loads better than the rest of the politicians of his day.
And letting your nation’s industries be destroyed by “fair competition” from nations utilizing slave labor isn’t very patriotic OR smart.
And 3 years later Reagan handed 4 million illegals amnesty. How’d that work out?
Do you guys have no regard for your own credibility?
It’s in my post. Chamber of Commerce and looooooooooves illegals. What part don’t you get?
‘Trump is also now running full throttle on an anti-immigration platform that could hurt growth as well and alienate Republicans from ethnic voters that the GOP needs if it is going to win in 2016.’
This is a horrible idea. No way we have enough foreign invaders here already. We need more criminals, rapists, murderers, child molesters and parasites asap. Plus there are probably still a few formerly eradicated, deadly diseases that haven’t made it across the border yet. Finally, the horror of Americans having more job options cannot be permitted. Those are foreign invader jobs—and let’s not forget it.
(Also, sovereignty is overrated. The border should remain wide open forever—or until we change the name to Mexico North, whichever comes first.)
Pat Buchanan is a trade protectionist, too.
It is a very simple simple process and a rational one also, if you do not protect your countries ability to produce what is needed then you are subject to another for needed good’s. It is only a matter of time that our nation gets weakened to the point economically that we would no longer be able to purchase anything because of social costs ....been watching this since the 70’s....I loathe foreign goods and seek out American made products. This is from a guy who drives his gravely onto the bed of his 1971 International Harvester 1210 .....
