Trump: I’m winning because Americans are 'tired of being the patsies'
The Hill ^ | August 29,2015 | By Mark Hensch

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he is leading the GOP race because he represents Americans who have had it with their nation coming up short.

“People in this country are smart,” he told listeners at the National Federation of Republican Assemblies’ 2015 conference in Nashville on Saturday.

“We’re tired of being the patsies for everyone,” Trump said.

“There is a big, big, growing-by-leaps-and-bounds silent majority out there. [The 2016 race] is going to be an election based on competence.”

Trump argued he is surging in national polls because he represents the Tea Party supporters ignored by Democrats and betrayed by Republicans.

“I love the Tea Party,” Trump said. “You people have not been treated fairly. These are people who work hard and love their country, and then get beat up by the media. It’s disgusting.”

“At least I have a microphone and can fight back,” the outspoken billionaire added.

Trump indicated he envisions a much wider base for his campaign than traditional Republican voters next election cycle.

“You don’t know how big you are,” he told listeners. “The Tea Party has tremendous power. It’s Democrats, it is evangelicals, it is everybody.”

The New York business mogul also vowed he would not succumb to the prestige and power of Washington’s political establishment if he wins in 2016.

“They go to Washington and they get weak,” Trump said of Democrats and Republicans alike. “They get there and they see these beautiful, vaulted ceilings and they say, ‘Honey, I’ve made it.’ That won’t happen to me, I promise.”

Trump also said he intends on saving taxpayer dollars by focusing his energy on the nation’s capital if elected next year.

LOL. That’s such a specious argument. One aide a long time ago suggested they should. Prove it was anything beyond that. And just to be clear, are you saying a single payer system is good?

“You Sir, are right on the mark. This is all about Trump attempting to take the Trump brand global like Nike and Coca-Cola without having to spend a dime.”

You mean the Trump “brand” has been local?

Conspiracy theories are fun and all, but at least come up with something that makes sense.

Well nick isn’t DU but he is certainly insistent that his negative perception of Trump is the only valid one.

He can always tune into Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt for solace since the GOPe/RINO wing has a special hatred going for Trump. Trump means the end of the Ruling Class/Open Borders strangehold on government that they are part of.

With Trump there is a chance for the long overdue revolution. Without Trump there is status quo, i.e, this nation’s rapid decline continues.

It may be too late anyway. Demographics is destiny and 50 years of open borders + the welfare state may have sealed our fate.

We shall soon find out one way or another.

That he says what’s on people’s minds and gets them.

Most politicians tell people what they want to hear and they’re afraid of stoking controversy for fear of losing votes.

Trump has broken through that and says what he thinks with good humor.

And have you seen him rely on a teleprompter?

Mama B...there are a hosts of reasons why Trumps popularity is what it is and we’ve heard them all....but he does lack the “stability” and “clarity” of just what he stands for as he himself has stated that “you have to be flexible”.

I’m not convinced Trump can handle Washington in such a way as to accomplish what needs to be done....nor that he will understand “how” that needs to be done to stick. We still don’t know who he would appoint in his cabinet....he’s dodging that as being to early....which it is...but it’s also too early to claim the “winner” which he’s doing.

Most here do have reservations about Trump and with good reason....he needs to have clarity in what he proposes and not just say he can do the job. Most here are listening and want to see that clarity.

I suppose its possible he doesn't really mean it.

But he is absolutely spot on correct. And he's the only one saying it.

I agree completely. And, I will add, I look for the "he doesn't mean it" meme to be part of the MSM/Dem attack on him.

You support Trump, and you call me immature?

Trump supporters love to say people who tell the truth about Trump are trolls. Trump is a Democrat with gutter trash morals. Can you explain why a conservative should support him? The only "proof" he is conservative is the media claims he is? This man is the exact opposite of Reagan in every way.

I've been on FR for almost a decade more than you and always supported conservatism. Now I am a troll just because won't ditch my conservative values when it's trendy to do so?

Trump supporters are like millenials on steroids.

Republican elites loathe him for pandering to conservatives AKA the unwashed masses.

Legitimizing the Tea Party is like worshiping the Golden Calf to them.

He doesn’t care.

....”Most politicians tell people what they want to hear and they’re afraid of stoking controversy for fear of losing votes.....Trump has broken through that”......

I don’t think so though he’s certainly exposed what they do do. Pointing fingers is fine and we all welcome that....but he’s really not saying anything we don’t already know.

I want to hear more ‘details’ from rump...he’s slipping about to much and it would be helpful if he’d state clearly what and how he intends to carry out his plans....which they aren’t clear either.

It’s find to say build a wall...get out the criminals....we’ve been saying that too...but how he intends to do so...and that legally is another story which some have blown holes in to date.

You make him sound like Clinton. So, just because someone says what the public wants to hear, even if he doesn’t believe it? We don’t need a Reality TV presidency. We don’t need to support a liberal, because his aides can come up with “what people want to hear.” He’s never going to help conservatives. Why do conservatives have to be duped in every single election?

Because he upsets the elite, praises the Tea Party and won’t be seduced by Washington?

What has your precious Republican Party done with all its power?

He just addressed Tea Party followers.

When was the last time Boehner and McConnell spoke to the base?

Oh and there’s Jeb who proclaimed he didn’t need or want conservatives to win.

At least Trump is courting the base, something that is beneath Jeb’s dignity.

Trump is the ultimate victory for the GOPe. He fits all their boxes, and he took out the Tea Party for them. He hired one of the biggest amnesty lobbyists to be his campaign manager. Anyone who thinks Trump will help with immigration, should also believe McConnell and Boehner.

This is the man who slammed Romney as too tough on immigration two years ago. I should believe he's not part of the "Ruling Class/Open Borders" crowd/. Oh yeah, that's right. I would be insane to trust him on that issue.

The man has a long track record of saying what he thinks will bring him attention and then completely switching his opinion. Multiple times.

You and i have a big difference of opinion about whether you can trust a liberal who is a proven liar. I don't think it's ever good to trust one.

Do you honestly think that sometime in the next few years he won't be a Democrat again and bash conservatives?

Then why is the establishment piling upon him?

If he’s good as you say for the brand, they have nothing to worry about.

By all lights, they should be welcoming, not dreading - a Reality TV presidency.

I doubt a conservative would be appreciated at DU, but Trump might be. I am 100% fiscally and socially conservative.

Then why is the establishment piling upon him?

First of all, I don't think they are. We have only Trump's word that Priebus is against him. Of course, opposing candidates will attack him, but that's to be expected. Most of the GOPe is hands off. And to a degree, he wants to be criticized like that. And of course, they are going to diavow him from some of the more gauche things he says. I'm sure they don't like his style, but they love his substance. If you pay attention, the media is doing exactly what Trump wants. They only criticize him for the things he wants to be criticized for and they don't vet him at all.
