Because Lord knows the last thing you want are the universities out there helping the public. Universities aren't supposed to "help the public." They're paid to educate. But sadly, far far too often, they've become the wellspring of socialist thought and political muscle.

Well then I'm sure you would find enough people in your legislature willing to defund every university program except for the Football and Basketball teams at Madison.

A college is for education. Colleges are within a university, but a university is more than a college and education. A university is for both education and public services.
