Ever since that little outburst by unruly cadets from The Citadel, the New Englanders have kept a tight thumb on South Carolina's ability to self-rule.

I retired to SC and have become sorry I did do. SC is conservative compared to New England or California, but it is trending to the squishy liberal middle of the road in its political outlook.
