A hack is done from the outside, by backtracking via limited access.

Calling it a hack is wrong.

They (the mainstream media) doing it because none of them want to sabotage a good story. It's "sexier" to have it done by the "honorable, moral" hackers out there doing it for the best of reasons even if they are using illegal means. Don't bother them with facts, that would destroy the myth they are busy building.
