U Of WI Director Of Community Relations Says Arresting Shoplifters Is Over-Policing
Ethics Alarms ^ | 8/22/2015 | Rick Jones

Posted on 08/24/2015 4:10:24 PM PDT by Pining_4_TX

UW Director of Community Relations Everett Mitchell, speaking at a University of Wisconsin Madison panel dealing with “Best Policing Practices,” argued that police should stop responding to shoplifting and thefts at Wal-Mart and Target to reduce what he refers to as “over policing” of the community. Yes, he really believes that enforcing the law regarding property crimes against retailers is “over-policing.” Mitchell, an employee of an institution that exists to enlighten the young and impressionable, said that communities should be able to decide for themselves what laws should be enforced, and that the ultimate goal of law enforcement is not the actual enforcement of law, but community safety as defined by the community itself. If the community thinks declaring open season on the local Walmart—looting, essentially—is just fine, then the police shouldn’t arrest anyone for it. Theft from big box stores, he explained, is an example of a crime that police and the community may view differently.

How the owner of the stores that get robbed, the employees that will lose jobs when the store leaves to relocate someplace that doesn’t think theft is “safe,” and the families that will have no place to shop might feel about his plan was not discussed. Mitchell, you see, is an irresponsible idiot.

He was also formerly an assistant District Attorney in the Dane County District Attorney’s Office. He must have been great at that job.

Mitchell said,

“I just don’t think that they should be prosecuting cases or bringing up cases for people who steal from Wal-Mart. I just don’t think that, right? I don’t think Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance. They should be using justification, the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?”

State Legislatures need to get to work isolating these universities from the rest of state budgets.

With a title like that, you have to know that this troglodyte is pulling down at least 200 Large to tell these morons what they want to hear.

Oh yeah - It's all free.

But just go ahead and steal any liberal elitist's property and see what happens.

Apart from his nutty ideas is it too much to ask that a University officers express themselves in clear, concise, grammatical English.

“The world has gone stark raving mad.”

We are so screwed. So much of the population already agrees with this sort of thinking that it will take an act of God to change it. The sad reality is that if the people whose conscience allows them to steal would just be allowed to steal, we could cut out all the hundreds of thousands of government middlemen whose sole existence is essentially based upon giving others the authority and “right” to steal from the productive. All those abused government programs? Why not just cut to the chase and let people squat, steal, and take what they think they’re entitled to anyway. If you do this to the tune of millions of dollars by funneling money through the proper routes, there isn’t any penalty. Why not allow the same on a lower dollar scale? sarc

Ping. Stuff in Madison is free not. Wonder if there’s a price limit. I’ll probably pay for stuff even in Madison.

Another Madison, Wisconsin “social justice”, “redistributive goods” justice clown.

Really sets a good example for black youth.

Maybe Walmart should enter into a legal agreement with the U of WI Director of Community Relations to have Walmart prepare a bill for the cost of shoplifting each month and present it to his office for payment. The Director of Community Relations office sounds like a fake operation with a lot of extra cash available for such an agreement.

So, I go to Walmart tonight, bought a few items. Told my cashier this story, she just shook her head at what nonsense it was. The guy behind me in line says, well, they (Walmart) are run by criminals.

So I said, I guess it’s open season on Walmart, then.

BTW, my cashier was a young black girl, the dude behind me was a white guy (like me).

Except I don’t think you get to shoplift at Walmart for free.

But hey, that’s just me.

The Walmart nearest to me has an overwhelming shoplifting problem, so bad that they keep the option of closing the store on the table. Everyone knows how bad it is, but rarely is anything done about it. I used to actually watch people and their children steal while standing in the checkout line. Adults and kids pocketing the small items near the register, and just as often, items in or under the cart not being rung up, or even items passed out of the basket to children who just walk past the register with their new stolen toy. The cashiers are aware of it but can’t keep an eye on everybody as they are ringing things up. It disgusts me, so when a person ‘accidentally forgets’ to tell the cashier about the case of beer under the cart I remind them that it is there. Or when one of their children either pocket or start eating a candy bar taken off the shelf next to the register, I say “don’t forget about that candy bar”. I’m sure none of the thieves appreciate it, but it really bothers me that the parents allow their kids to get away with it, and the parent obviously knows they didn’t pay for little Miguel’s candy bar he’s eating as they walk to the car. This mindset that is plaguing the nation that stores “owe” them something, or that it’s OK to steal, but only from stores fitting the criteria of some nebulous size, is wrong on so many levels, hurts everybody to some degree, and is not without repercussions on a basic financial level, as well as the moral bankruptcy God most surely will collectively punish the nation for.

Now we have so called university leaders teaching that stealing is acceptable. Doom on him!
