Donald Trump Compares Himself to Billy Graham; Says 'My Favorite Book Is the Bible'
Christian Post ^ | 08/23/2015 | Anugrah Kumar

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump looked at the crowd gathered for his rally at a 40,000-seat college football stadium in Mobile, Alabama, saying he now knows how evangelist Billy Graham felt. He also said the book he likes the most is the Bible.

"I know how Billy Graham felt," Trump, a billionaire businessman, said, apparently jokingly, as he began his speech at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Trump also said, "What's my favorite book? The Bible! The Bible. ... We take the Bible all the way," according to The Washington Post's national political reporter Robert Costa, who tweeted the Republican candidate's remarks.

Anticipating a big turnover, Trump's campaign had to change the venue at the eleventh hour, to the football stadium. Trump was planning to hold the rally at the Mobile Civic Center arena, which seats only about 10,000 people, according to Yahoo News.

His campaign, which was expecting a crowd of about 35,000 people at the rally Friday night, also arranged for free shuttle buses, according to Mobile Press-Register.

"We have politicians that don't have a clue," Trump, who was wearing a red hat with his slogan, "Make America Great Again," written on it, said. "They're all talk, no action. What's happening to this country is disgraceful."

The Republican frontrunner added: "We're running on fumes. There's nothing here. ... We're not going to have a country left. We need to have our borders. We need to make great deals."

Talking about illegal immigration, he said, "We've gotta stop it. We're going to build a wall."

"In the case of other countries, including Mexico, you can't walk over the border and have a new citizen," he added. "We're the only place just about that's stupid enough to do it."

At the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa last month, Trump was asked about his faith.

"People are so shocked when they find out I am Protestant. I am Presbyterian. And I go to church and I love God and I love my church," he said.

Asked whether he has ever asked God to forgive him, Trump responded, "I am not sure I have. I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I don't think so. I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don't bring God into that picture. I don't."

He further explained, "When I drink my little wine — which is about the only wine I drink — and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed. I think in terms of 'let's go on and let's make it right.'"

Talking to CNN later, Trump denied that his statements damaged his chances with Evangelical voters, and said his polling in Iowa is very strong. However, he added that he'd "change" his "tone" as president. "Right now I'm trying to do something to make this country great again."

Some on here don’t want a leader - they want a pastor. We do need someone in office who believes in God and the Bible - I’m not so sure Trump is as egotistical as people think, but he puts forth an image of confidence. Sometimes he goes overboard on the bragging, and he admitted that in his speech in MI. He doesn’t need this job - he has an empire and enough money to last him and his family the rest of his life. Most of these yahoos want the job to keep the gravy train - eating at the trough of the American taxpayer - rolling. Yes, even Ted Cruz - as much as I like him. From what I’ve read - his main ambition from the time he got out of law school, was to work for the government. What that tells me is that he likes the cushy, job with the great benefits. There is just something about Cruz that I don’t trust and can’t put my finger on. Perhaps it is his wife’s background and influence, or perhaps there is something else - I don’t know yet, but it will come out. I don’t think he’s all that strong on illegal immigration either.

I wonder if he could recite The Lords Prayer. Even Presbyterians ask for forgiveness therein.

That said, were the election tomorrow, I’d vote for him.

Men in the media today would run screaming like a little girl from a spider. Trump would squish it. I’ve seen men here on FR high fiving each other over a story of a jogger kicking a 5 pound dog that was nipping at his heels into the next zip code. Really? Kicking a 5 pound dog doesn’t make you brave, it makes you a pussy.

Trump said he UNDERSTOOD how Billy Graham felt (upon preparing to enter a stadium filled with people who wanted to hear him speak).

The same people who believe Trump was trying to claim he was just like Billy Graham are the same ones who claim that Trump said Megyn Kelly was on her period.

I think that question was a set up. If he had answered what he has asked God’s forgiveness for - the media would have run with that 24/7 for weeks on end. I can’t believe people don’t understand the reasons behind these kind of questions. I remember they asked Jimmy Carter that question and he said he lusted in his heart after other women. They never let that go. So, what he has asked God’s forgiveness for is between him and God and not for public consumption - unless he chooses to share that. I think he’s smart not to do that.

If you can’t tell that he was pandering with that statement, I don’t know what to tell you.

Lighten up a little and let the Trump light shine. He knows he’s being over the top and he actually thinks perhaps mistakenly that you know it too. :-)

is among the most disingenuous, transparently-pandering statements I've ever heard from a politician.

No, I think the MOST ...... whatever you said... statement is Obama's "I am a Christian."

I don’t believe Trump when he says the Bible is his favorite book, any more than I believed Obama when he said he’s a Christian.

The fact that the left nominated (and elected) a phony, lying statist like Obama does not mean that we should do the same thing.

All the Freepers who seem to be SO NEGATIVE about Trump (nothing wrong with being a skeptic, but to be close-minded is a path to being a liberal) seem to all be psychic.

If you can’t tell that he was pandering with that statement, I don’t know what to tell you.

In politics, there is a ton of pandering. Especially during elections. What I object to is when the pandering crosses the line into LYING.

Do you think he is lying ?
