There are multitudes who have robbed successfully with just a revolver full. They held up trains (when they weren't even on board yet) and banks and a go-zillion tourists and assorted pedestrians that way. They didn't need an AK and 180-210 rounds of ammo.

The only reason for having that much ammo along is that someone anticipated a need. 7.62X39 ammo is relatively heavy, too, about twice as heavy as a similar number of 5.56 NATO cartridges.
