I’m sure they recognized the sound, but it’s still pretty impressive that they took it seriously. It’s normal to say to yourself, “Nah, it can’t be.”
And then they were brave enough to face an armed man, unarmed.

Yes, That sound is one that stays in forward memory for most people.
They did the job of being a U.S. Marine. A Marine is never “unarmed”.
