You don’t have to. Most people supporting him don’t care what he once was or even if he remains so....they support him because of what he is “saying”.....an important distinction for todays voters, on the whole, are looking for celebrity....that’s how Obama won and it will be how the next President wins. Which is why Hillary will not be the winner....she’s lost her “popularity”....regardless of what she says politically...she’s done.

You are, indeed, partly right. We are in as different a political era as Andrew Jackson was from John Quincy Adams. People complained and whined about it then---but it didn't change til a Jackson opponent, William Henry Harrison, learned how to play the game and beat AJ's hand-picked successor, Martin Van Buren---the father of the Democrat Party.

But there is much more to it as I've written here on FR extensively. There is a lack of trust in ANY traditional candidate---including Cruz---because of the elite structure of DC and the notion that no matter how ideologically pure he is, he could not effect any change. There is, on the other hand, widespread belief that Trump not only can, but will.
