Actually I was 21 and working for the Ford Campaign at the time. Ford played the “Rose Garden” strategy very well looking Presidential and closed that gap very well in the months leading up the election. He made that huge gaff in the debates on some communist country having democracy.
He just came off as a Dim Bulb and lost, but not by that much. And yes that Pardon of Nixon hurt, but I think in the course of time that was the right decision.
