Apparently it’s not safe to fly on aircraft from Indonesia.
That’s a bit of xenophobia showing through. You have no idea how much air travel takes place in Indonesia - a country made up of over 10,000 islands, all linked by air.
Say you have an air crash in the United States - and there have been MANY, would you announce that it’s not safe to fly on aircraft from the United States?
Also, you need to know that the ATR42 is from Europe (France and Italy), not Indonesia.
Having done considerable flying over the Owen Stanley Mt. range in Papua back 50 years ago I can attest to the fact that flying there is no picnic. The skies are not friendly and the terrain is as inhospitable as any you will find anywhere. Also at that time there were still headhunters roaming the countryside. Not a place to make an unscheduled landing for certain.

The above quote from the article is not xenophobic at all. Are you collectivist of some stripe or another?
I can guarantee to you that the US has way more flights on a daily basis than Indonesia, but you do not see the Europeans banning US air carriers like they do with third world countries. The Europeans have very good reasons to ban such airlines.
If you can find a list of American air carriers that the Europeans have banned I’d be more than happy for you to post that here with links included.

Phobia --- yes. Xenophobia -- that's not really the correct use of that word. So far there have three crashes of aircraft from Indonesia during a relatively short period of time. (Yes, I know, one was shot down.) Now, there might be a fourth. One doesn't have to be a genius to see that something is very wrong with the air travel business in Indonesia. It can't all be due to bad luck.

When was one shot down?
The flight over the Ukraine, brought down by a Russian missile. I forgotten what it's flight number was. Sorry, that was Malaysian Airlines flight 17 -- Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. My mistake. But still, that's three aircraft from the same region that have gone down plus another one is now supposedly missing. I think that says something about how those airlines are operated.
