Much is being made of Trump's refusal last night to pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee if it is not him. But it seems to me that he did not provide the most valid reasons for his refusal, at least not the details.
Many news stories and past discussion threads here concerned an attempt a couple of weeks by "Big Donors'" to concoct a scheme to force Trump out of the first debate. Then this week, other stories about how more "Big Donor" were demanding that Trump be "taken out" in the first debate.
Trump probably won that exchange with Chris Wallace, but he could have won it much bigger.
NO PRIMARY VOTING HAS TAKEN PLACE YET. THE FIRST IS STILL ABOUT SIX MONTHS OFF.
TRUMP HAS SEVERAL MONTHS TO DECIDE WHETHER TO STAY IN THE REPUBLICAN RACE OR DROP OUT AND START QUALIFYING AS AN IMDEPENDENT.

“Sore loser” laws prevent a candidate who loses in a primary election from running in the general election as a candidate of another party.
What primary has Trump lost as of today?
He could drop out of running this year, and run as an independent, yes.
But most are asking if he loses the primary, or insinuating that question.
If he runs in the primary as GOP, he cannot get enough electoral votes to win the general as an independent.
Depends on how you view Trump, the RNC, the primary process in general, many considerations that vary by individual.
I think it's good that he did not take any pledge.
Chris Wallace came off as a malicious bully. His sniveling pretense that he was asking “all” the candidates did NOT make Trump look bad. It made Chris Wallace look like a tool. Trump’s raising his hand won the day. He is not going to be manipulated. The others secretly wanted to raise their hands, too! The American public is getting sick and tired of the media hired hatchetmen and hatchetwomen, who’ve long since abandoned all semblance of journalism.
I feel certain the questions are being asked within the context of what is possible under election laws. You are just trying to complicate it for whatever reason.
I agree, that were just some facts that Trump could have used to make his answer even more powerful.
Another (non-exclusive) slant on what you are saying is; Libs and LIVs watching TV do not even understand they are watching entertainment. It is a crappy place to conduct negotiation, indeed, it’s not negotiation at all.
“Negotiation” to them is how PC they can be. And when society gets to the point where Mark O’Malley gets boo’ed for “All lives matter” this is an amateur attempt to appeal to a crowd of idiots and you’ll never get it right.
People ONLY look at the surface. This is what an 11 second attention span gets you.
It's EARLY in the race to the Presidency. Way early. There's nobody paying attention except political junkies for the most part. So in a big public appearance like the debate what's the best play? Appear to be like everyone else? Or stand out and make the story about you? Clearly number 2. He could have annuciated long, boring policy speeches that everyone KNOWS amount to nothing in the long run. Same old same old. But he wanted to stand out because there were going to be bunch of people really seeing him for the first time. A lot of low information voters. And what did they see? Trump getting attacked. Trump fighting back. That's what people like and that's what was delivered last night.
He'll keep this same strategy until the field is narrow enough. And then he'll focus on the remaining gop candidates. How he'll take them out is a good question. But you can bet he'll use a populist theme to do so.
Remember Trump is a businessman. He set a goal. Be the President. He's broken down the process into a series of goals.
That's why the press and establishment is terrified. He's not approaching it as a political process. He's all business.
I do like the Constitution Party.
I feel the general public is being mislead on the issue.
Yup, he goes 3rd party and the Republicrats have to change their game plan. He'll make it clear that they are really one and the same party.
I believe Will, that realistically Trump had no time to do mortal combat with the trio of killers before him, and mentally process the cutting insults, and then respond with bullet points on the meaning of LEVERAGE.
No way. That was no place for Trump to shine, last night, with his arms in splints fighting thugs.
They didn’t ask him if he committed to not running as a third party candidate. They asked him if he would commit to supporting whoever the candidate was. And he answered no. Nothing about 3rd party was even mentioned so I think a lot of people are assuming that was what he meant. That is a big difference.
It was unfair, but he could do it if he had the facts, I think he's still relying too much on his original talking points. There is so much he could add to several of them. People will begin to roll their eyes after hearing the same phrases a certain number of times.
And he had answered the third party question several times before, so that was an old question for him. He just hadn't added the powerful facts to it he could have, the topic of this thread. (All the "Big Donors" trying to keep him out of the debate, and demanding that the other candidates take him out") Talk about not being treated fairly, which he did mention, but without those Big Donor stories.
He does need to flesh out some of his talking points and add more examples and facts. Strong supporters are beginning to say that.
I believe more are coming to “get” Trump and part of it is that he is doing building blocks that start with repetition.
Instead of being told by someone what it was that Trump has said, more and more viewers are able to hear his voice, see his body language, and can also see the obvious media establishment’s organized mark of destruction on him.
Taken all together it is human nature to like hearing the truth and rue the political assassination aligned against him. He can make the sale.
His repetition is salesmanship.
Iowa Trump supporters were interviewed by a Morning Joe guest. The supporters said that FOX News just showed the world everything of what is wrong with America.
That is a good perspective. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Almost nobody remembers who was leading in the first mile, 25 miles later.
Trump is engaging more people in looking at the GOP than we would normally have at this time. They need tough questions or even unfair questions to weed out the weak before we spend too much money fighting ourselves.
That's true, and some of us watch politics more closely and more often than most, so we've already heard the repetitions far more times than most. But any repetition can become monotonous. He just needs to begin to expand on some of his ideas and add more examples and facts.
I am sure you might be correct, but all of America is pissed off to know that FOX tried to break his knees with that question. They knew very well he was the only candidate on the stage anywhere who will not bow to the Establishment but instead has SAID he would use a Third Party run as leverage against the media railroaders and the Establishment if he can’t get a fair shot.

I agree with you too, but you realize, I know, that once he lays out his policy manifesto he will be burned at the stake.
It is waaay too soon for that. Maybe October. Maybe not.

I think that’s a false choice. Trump is very competitive, and will use all the tools available to win, that includes both hard work, and using leverage intelligently. Trump is energetic, and is not afraid of hard work.
